Regé-Jean Page Dodges Bridgerton Season 2 Cameo Question

Former Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page had a vague response to whether his character would be making a cameo in season 2. Landing on Netflix on Christmas Day last year, Bridgerton proved a smash-hit for its depiction of high society in regency-era London, pulling in 82 million household view in its first 28 days, making it the most-watched original series on the streaming platform. Page played Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings and one of the show's most eligible bachelors who refused to marry. The Duke found himself falling for Phoebe Dynevor's Daphne Bridgerton, eventually marrying her and having a child by the series' end.

Bridgerton's runaway success led Netflix to renew the series for an additional third and fourth season, but many fans were disheartened to hear that neither Page nor Dynevor would be returning for season 2. Page himself is busy elsewhere, currently filming Dungeons & Dragons alongside Chris Pine, as well as Netflix's Russo brothers-helmed thriller The Gray Man alongside Pine, Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. Page has also been tipped as a potential replacement for James Bond once Daniel Craig exits the franchise, although that remains to be seen.

As reported by Deadline, Page was asked during an interview with British GQ whether there was a possibility that the Duke could make a cameo appearance in season 2 of Bridgerton. The actor dodged the question perfectly, saying: “I couldn’t possibly tell you!” When pressed further, he retorted: “Isn’t there something wonderful about being surprised by what you weren’t suspecting?”

The initial reaction from fans to the removal of Page from Bridgerton season 2 came as a surprise to many involved, including executive producer Shonda Rhimes. Rhimes pointed out that Simon and Daphne's story had come to its end since the pair finally got their 'happily ever after.' This makes sense, since the show is based on Julia Quinn's novels, with each book focusing on a different member of the Bridgerton family as they find true love. Daphne's story is now over, but season 2 is based on the second novel, The Viscount Who Loved Me. It will follow the eldest Bridgerton sibling, Anthony, now that Daphne and Simon are away at their mansion in the country with their child.

Page's coyness about the return of the Duke fits perfectly with the party line being spouted by Netflix, who also reportedly refused to comment on whether the character would make an appearance. Despite having other commitments, a brief appearance from Page at some point in Bridgerton's season 2 is not yet off the cards. However, the actor's tight-lipped response may be a directive from the streaming service itself.

Even with the shift in main character for the second season, it would still certainly be a rewarding piece of fan-service to allow Page to make a fleeting cameo. And considering how reserved both Page and Netflix are being in their response to the theory, it seems more than likely that this will ultimately happen. However, as the actor notes, eager viewers would likely be more thrilled if they were surprised by his appearance, rather than spending all season anticipating it. Fans will just have to await confirmation when Bridgerton season 2 arrives, although they shouldn't expect that to be any time soon.
