Shang-Chi 2 Has A Lot Of Story & Character Options, Says Director

According to director Destin Daniel Cretton, there are a lot of story and character options left open for Shang-Chi 2Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings came out this weekend, introducing Marvel fans to a brand new hero, the kung fu master who was dragged away from his normal life by the Ten Rings organization. It stars Simu Liu, Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh, and Awkwafina. Shang-Chi's opening night gross outnumbered F9's, perhaps because of Disney+'s decision not to stream the superhero movie for premier access.

Although a Shang-Chi 2 has yet to be confirmed, it wouldn't be a surprise if the sequel was announced in Marvel's next big drop of upcoming MCU titles. So far, every Marvel lead character except Hulk and Black Widow has had a sequel either announced or released. Taking into consideration the fact that Black Widow was the ninth film to feature the character and that Marvel legally can't make solo Hulk movies, that's a solid track record which pretty much guarantees more Shang-Chi.

Luckily, there is plenty of ground for Shang-Chi to cover should he get to appear in a sequel. Destin Daniel Cretton told Screen Rant that in Shang-Chi there are "pretty clear arrows pointing" to what could happen in Shang-Chi's future outings. He said he was "really excited" for these heroes to meet even more MCU members and go to new places. The whole team is "very excited at the doors that were open" by the story they were able to tell in Shang-Chi. Read the full quote here:

I think, by the end of this movie, there are some pretty clear arrows pointing in the directions that we would love to take the character - and not only Shang-Chi, but I’m really excited to see all of these characters start to interact with the other members of the MCU and go to places that we haven’t gone before. We’re all very excited at the doors that were open because of this movie.

Even once it's greenlit, a Shang-Chi 2 is unlikely to come before summer 2023. The MCU has already announced its calendar up until that point, ending with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in May 2023. That should give fans plenty of time to pore over every inch of the film's ending (and its end-credit sequences) to find the threads that are most likely to be followed into the sequel.

Plus, with his comment about meeting other members of the MCU, Cretton has also reminded us that there is potential to see these characters again even sooner than Shang-Chi 2. The Shang-Chi cast might be making cameos in some of the Marvel movies already slated for release. The most likely candidate would be Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, considering that those universes have already crossed over thanks to Benedict Wong's appearance as Wong in Shang-Chi, but fans should keep in mind that Marvel loves surprising them with cameos wherever they can. The 8 movies already announced will provide plenty of opportunities for Shang-Chi and co. to make their grand reentry into the MCU.
