The 2005 Fantastic Four Movie Gets A Callback in Marvel Comics

The Fantastic Four is officially taking an important plot point from Fox's feature film. 2005's Fantastic Four film was the first wide-release cinematic debut of Marvel's first family, but the Tim Story-directed film failed to live up to studio and audience expectations. Neither the 2007 followup (Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer) nor the 2015 reboot (stylized as Fant4stic) brought fans of the Marvel property back to the cinema. Yet upcoming preview images for Fantastic Four #36, written by Dan Slott with art by Nico Leon and colors by Dono Sánchez-Almara, showcase a key plot point when it comes to the fate of Johnny Storm.

Two issues previously, in Fantastic Four #34, Victor Von Doom invited the Fantastic Four to his extravagant wedding - and even asked Reed Richards to be his best man. Unfortunately, the bride confessed on the altar to sleeping with Johnny Storm. An enraged Doctor Doom attacked all the guests present, but ultimately decided that death was too good for Storm. Thus, instead of killing him, Doom gave him the Thing's classic weakness: the inability to turn off his power, forever condemning him to be "...a true Human Torch."

Preview pages for the upcoming Fantastic Four #36 have been released by Marvel, showcasing the aftermath of Doctor Doom's curse. Johnny is heating up uncontrollably, and Reed is powerless to stop the process. Mister Fantastic can only surmise "The effect might be linked to your emotional state. Have you tried calming down?" The Human Torch adamantly responds in the negative. He knows how often Reed has tried to "cure" the Thing, and how often those attempts have failed.

This is a direct callback to 2005's Fantastic Four film, in which Reed Richards surmises that Susan Storm (played by Jessica Alba) has powers that could be more easily harnessed "...if you could control your emotional state better." Anger, rage, and frustration all trigger her abilities (and most of these feelings are brought on by a detached and emotionally-distant Reed). Furthermore, a second plot point is Johnny's capability to go "supernova." His temperature exceeds 4000 degrees Kelvin during an experiment, destroying the test chamber entirely. Johnny is warned never to go supernova again - but at the end of the film, Doctor Doom is defeated by Susan containing Doom and Johnny in a force field while he burns Doom using the dangerous technique.

Johnny Storm's inability to "flame off" isn't just impractical - it's dangerous. Unlike the Thing, who can still live a relatively normal life, Johnny must continually be shielded by Susan Storm to protect those around him - much like the climax of the 2005 film. Out of the four Fantastic Four films made, the 2005 endeavor is the least-reviled by fans; although that's hardly a distinguished accolade, it's well-liked enough to be used as source material for Fantastic Four #36, releasing in stores September 22nd, 2021.
