The Suicide Squad: 10 Unexpectedly Great Character Duos

Much like James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies, The Suicide Squad has been praised for creating a tangible team dynamic between its central characters. Amidst all the hard-R violence and shocking sight gags, the members of Task Force X become real friends and work together to bring down a giant starfish.

Within the team, and among the supporting cast, a few key character duos stood out. Fans didn’t expect to have their heart broken by the friendship of a rat whisperer and a talking shark-man, but that’s exactly what happened.

10 Ratcatcher 2 & King Shark

While the other members of Task Force X are traditionally bad guys trying to cut it as antiheroes, Ratcatcher 2 is surprisingly sweet. After King Shark tries to devour her in her sleep, her response is to empathize with him and figure out why he’s so glum. He tells her he has no friends, so she offers to be the first one.

When her Task Force X teammates tell her that being King Shark’s friend will get her killed, she says, “If I die ‘cause I gambled on love, it’ll be a worthy death.” This wholesome attitude makes Ratcatcher 2 the heart of the movie. Unlike everybody else, she doesn’t judge people based on their surface-level qualities.

9 Harley Quinn & Javelin

German Olympian-turned-superhuman mercenary Javelin is one of the many characters introduced in The Suicide Squad’s opening sequence only to be killed off moments later. But his impact on Harley Quinn lasts long after his death.

He trusts her to take his javelin after he dies and tells her she’ll know what to do with it. Javelin remains with Harley in spirit throughout the rest of the movie, as she uses his javelin to slash her way out of imprisonment and to eventually let a swarm of rats into Starro’s eye to gnaw him to death from the inside.

8 Amanda Waller & Bloodsport

Whereas Amanda Waller was characterized as a mercenary-seeking Nick Fury in the first Suicide Squad movie, she’s shown to be just as morally gray as her recruits in the second one. She constantly butts heads with Bloodsport, and Idris Elba and Viola Davis bring a hard-hitting edge to the characters’ screaming matches.

Initially, Bloodsport refuses to join Task Force X, so Waller ups the ante by threatening to send his estranged daughter to a prison where she’ll likely be killed. From that point on, the two can’t agree on anything.

7 Polka-Dot Man & Hallucinations Of His Mom

With Polka-Dot Man, James Gunn and David Dastmalchian turned one of DC’s most ludicrous characters into one of its most sympathetic. Polka-Dot Man is deeply disturbed and insecure, both from having polka-dots all over his body and from being sent to be experimented on by his mother.

Throughout the movie, he sees everybody as hallucinations of his mom. This running gag results in a bunch of memorable visuals and culminates in a hilarious payoff when a giant hallucination of his mother replaces Starro as the kaiju terror smashing buildings to pieces.

6 Ratcatcher 2 & Sebastian

Ratcatcher 2 has the ability to summon a swarm of hundreds of rats to gruesomely gnaw her enemies to death, but there’s only one rat that she keeps as a pet and his name is Sebastian. Their loyalty to one another throughout the movie is endlessly endearing.

While Ratcatcher is nice to everybody, Sebastian is even nicer. He helps out in any way he can and waves hello whenever he meets new people. Who knew a rat could be so cute?

5 Harley Quinn & Captain Boomerang

In the opening set piece of The Suicide Squad, Amanda Waller assembles a team including Rick Flag, Harley Quinn, and Captain Boomerang from the first movie and sends them off to another deadly black ops mission. On the flight over, Harley shares a ton of banter with Captain Boomerang — whom she affectionately calls “Boomer” — and is shown to be devastated when he’s annihilated by a spinning helicopter propellor.

Harley and Boomer are shown to have more of a tangible friendship in the opening five minutes of The Suicide Squad than in the entire 2016 Suicide Squad movie.

4 Bloodsport & Sebastian

From the moment Ratcatcher is introduced, Bloodsport reveals that underneath his tough-guy facade, he’s terrified of rats. But Ratcatcher’s little sidekick Sebastian is the kindest, most harmless rat in the world. He constantly tries to connect with Bloodsport and become his friend throughout the movie to no avail.

Eventually, on the helicopter ride home, Bloodsport warms to Sebastian and lets him sit in his lap so he can stroke his back. This moment marks the beginning of a beautiful friendship, but it’s also symbolic of Bloodsport becoming more sensitive and open-minded in general.

3 Starro & The Thinker

Intellectual super-baddie the Thinker is the main antagonist of The Suicide Squad until he reveals that he’s been experimenting on the true antagonist — the giant, kaiju-sized alien starfish Starro — for decades. When Starro finally gets its hands on the Thinker, he begs for his life and promises to change his ways, but it’s far too late for that and Starro brutally bisects him.

The Thinker had been tormenting Starro with experiments for years from behind the safety of very thick glass. When that glass is broken and Starro is free to conquer, ripping the Thinker to shreds offers some poetic justice.

2 Rick Flag & Everyone Else On Task Force X

Rick Flag was in the original Suicide Squad movie, but the character is much more interesting and likable this time around. In The Suicide Squad, he’s the voice of reason who has to explain why a friendly rat is waving at people. James Gunn characterized Flag as a deadpan foil to all his wacky teammates. He points out the irony of Peacemaker’s cause and explains away all of Harley Quinn’s reckless riffing.

It’s a shame that Flag’s role in the first movie was reduced to doing the script’s legwork with endless exposition because Joel Kinnaman plays the role of the “straight man” perfectly.

1 Bloodsport & Peacemaker

When Amanda Waller introduces Peacemaker to Bloodsport, her profile is a word-for-word copy of the profile she gave to Bloodsport himself. Bloodsport points out that Peacemaker is exactly the same as him and Peacemaker quips, “But better.”

This set up Bloodsport and Peacemaker to constantly try to one-up each other throughout the mission with the brutality of their kills and the extravagance of their weapons. Idris Elba and John Cena shared incredible chemistry as bickering mercenaries. Their final standoff involving a small bullet that pierces regular-sized bullets determines once and for all who’s better.
