Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves' PC Port Isn't Being Made By Naughty Dog

The recently announced Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves PC port is not going to be to made by the games’ original developer, Naughty Dog. The Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves collection was announced at the most recent PlayStation Showcase, and it will see both Uncharted: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy getting a remaster for the PlayStation 5, as well as bringing the games to PC for the first time.

There have long been rumblings that the Uncharted games would ultimately make their way to PC. Sony has recently been making more of its exclusive IPs available to a wider audience, with Days Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn both already making the jump to the additional platform over the last couple of years. Given that the Uncharted videogames and their hero Nathan Drake are two of PlayStation’s most recognizable and critically acclaimed assets, the assumption that they too would eventually make a move to PC was understandable.

These assumptions were confirmed last week, when the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves collection was revealed for PlayStation 5 and PC. However, unlike the original games in the mainline series - which were developed by Naughty Dog - a recent PlayStation blog post has shared that the PC port for Legacy of Thieves will instead be developed by Sony’s partners at Iron Galaxy. The post also went on to confirm that the PC port for Legacy of Thieves will become available shortly after the PlayStation 5 remaster of the two final Uncharted games. Currently, these remasters are slated to launch in early 2022, although at the time of writing no exact date has been given.

This will not be the first time that a different studio has been brought on to work on an Uncharted game. The PlayStation Vita title Uncharted: Golden Abyss was developed by Bend Studio, the brains behind Days Gone. It was also recently revealed that an Uncharted spin-off game had been in the works, with Bend Studio again penned to helm the development behind it. This game has ultimately been scrapped, but the idea of future games in the Uncharted series is clearly something that has been on Sony’s mind for a while, even if Naughty Dog is not involved.

Despite not offering any new games to the franchise, the timing for the release of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves is a very smart move by Sony. With the live action Uncharted movie set to release in early 2022 as well, interest surrounding the games is likely to be piqued for both seasoned fans and those new to the franchise. Whether or not Sony decides to add the first three mainline Uncharted games to its burgeoning selection of PC ports, however, still remains to be seen.
