Why The Office Had To Pause Filming On Hilarious Birthday Party Scene

The Office had to temporarily halt production on the hilarious birthday party scene and now enthusiasts of the show know why. The Office began as a British television series starring Ricky Gervais before crossing over international boundaries to be rebooted as an American sitcom. The BBC version was only on air for two seasons, falling drastically short of the American version’s success which saw nine seasons before the series reached its conclusion.

The comedy-filled show was filmed as a mockumentary, focusing on the staff working at a paper supply company called Dunder Mifflin. The Office was bound to produce countless laughs with a cast including actors like Steve Carell (Michael Scott), John Krasinski (Jim Halpert), Mindy Kaling (Kelly Kapoor), and Rainn Wilson (Dwight Schrute). The multiple pranks on Dwight, cringeworthy presentations by Michael Scott, and clueless nature of Kevin are among just a few of the scenarios that brought on some of the show’s most memorable moments.

Even the stars of the show had a difficult time containing their laughter when filming The Office, so much so that production had to be halted for the actors to compose themselves. On a recent episode of the Office Ladies podcast (via Mashable), which is hosted by two members of the sitcom, Jenna Fisher and Angela Kinsey, it was revealed that one scene from the episode "Lecture Circuit: Part 1" did just that. In a pitiful attempt to rectify forgetting Kelly's birthday, Dwight and Jim attempt to throw her a party and the results are hilarious. Read Kinsey's comments below about how the events unfolded, below:

"I want to tell you, the part I remember them laughing at is Dwight says 'Are you trying to hurt my feelings?' and he throws the balloon, but it didn't have enough weight to travel in the air and so the balloon with the sad streamer attached just kind of [falls] in the air. He was trying to throw it at John and it just didn’t travel," she said. "You can see Rainn starting to break, because I think he broke every time."

The result of Wilson's failed attempt to pelt Krasinski with a balloon led to a pause in production. The actors were unable to control their laughter enough to get a good take on film. Wilson also recalled the outtakes in his book The Bassoon King. The actor deemed the situation as "the longest inappropriate laughter" while on set and stated that it took 20 minutes for the duo to get a hold of themselves well enough to commence filming. Luckily, the actors were finally able to control themselves enough to create the scene which now lives in the memories of The Office fanatics.

Now, the simple words "It is your birthday" elicit smiles from those who have watched the episode. The banter between Jim and Dwight is responsible for a majority of the show's laughs. The neglected birthday debacle ranks up there with other scenes shared by Wilson and Krasinski, like the jello prank or when the pair impersonated each other. Audiences can take delight in the fact that The Office cast shared as many laughs and fond memories of the episode as those who viewed it. Kelly's birthday may have been forgotten, but this scene won't be.
