Wolverine is Heading Underwater in A New X-Force Costume

Wolverine's costume is getting an underwater upgrade as he embarks on important missions in upcoming issues of X-Force and his self-titled series. In a new suit that looks like it came straight out of Ridley Scott's Prometheus, Wolverine is ready to explore unfamiliar terrain that he is rarely ever shown in: the ocean. This poses a question that few have asked, with Wolverine's regenerative abilities, how does Logan function underwater?

The current run of X-Force written by Benjamin Percy deals with the living island of Krakoa and the mutant intelligence agency working to protect the nation from the secret agents trying to infiltrate it. As with all islands, Krakoa is surrounded by water—far from Wolverine's ideal terrain—and he'll need a special suit if he hopes to navigate the challenges coming his way. Wolverine is rarely shown underwater, and for good reason. Even with his healing abilities, Wolverine still needs air to breathe, which means he can still drown. Not to mention it's probably harder for Wolverine to swim with a metal skeleton. Logan's son Daken, who shares his father's powers, once died by drowning. Based on this alone it would be understandable for Wolverine to have hesitation when faced with being in the water.

According to the December solicitations from Marvel, X-Force #26 will be written by Benjamin Percy with art by Robert Gill, a main cover by Joshua Cassara, and a variant cover by Stephen Segovia. The issue sees Wolverine joined by Domino and Kid Omega as they brave the waves to recover something important stolen from Krakoa. The variant cover shows that Wolvierine will be outfitted with a new suit that will be form-fitting, blue, and will have a transparent helmet illuminated from the interior with a yellow light.

December will hold even more ocean adventures for Wolverine, as the Marvel solicits reveal that he will again be traveling under the sea in Wolverine #19, also written by Percy with art by Javier Fernandez, cover art by Adam Kubert, and a variant cover by E.M. Gist. The solicitation teases that Wolverine will face off against a Leviathan, a massive underwater monster that's "bigger and stronger and older than math can figure." Logan previously encountered this creature in X-Force #16, where it got away, but now he's setting out to hunt it down once and for all.

While Wolverine has been a defender of the island, even he admits that there is something problematic about Krakoa, which has been teased and hinted at in the current run of X-Force and Wolverine books. The solicitation also teases the introduction of new mutant technology rivaling the Blackbird Jet and promising major ramifications for upcoming X-Force issues. Hopefully, this new technology and his new suit will protect Wolverine better than the suits worn by the Prometheus crew, but as long as the Leviathan doesn't bleed acid, he should be okay. X-Force #26 will be released on December 8th, 2021 and Wolverine #19 will be released on December 15th, 2021.
