As the stars of TLC's 1000-Lb Sisters, Tammy and Amy Slaton have been upfront about their health and weight-loss struggles. The sisters have faced both physical and mental health issues. Many have been chronicled across the show's two seasons and they're sure to be discussed further in the new season of 1000-Lb Sisters when it premieres on November 15th.
In the first two seasons, viewers have watched the sisters overcome numerous challenges in their personal lives, including Amy's high-risk pregnancy and Tammy's ongoing battles with anxiety and depression. The pair's health issues are always a major talking point with some problems seriously worrying friends, family, and fans alike.
10 Tammy's Extreme Weight Gain
1000-Lb Sisters follows the sisters' weight-loss journey. However, in season 2, fans were shocked to learn that Tammy had gained weight rather than lost it. During a weigh-in with her doctor, viewers found out that she had gained 50lb in just 30 days, making her 40lb heavier than when the show originally started.
Chris Combs, Tammy and Amy's half-brother, was shocked too, stating on the show: "I didn't even think that was humanly possible." He goes on to explain that gaining 50lb in 30 days is equivalent to gaining 1 1/3lb every day. The weight gain has exacerbated Tammy's numerous other health problems.
9 Tammy's Gout and Leg Issues
Tammy has suffered from gout, a form of arthritis that affects the feet, for a number of years. She is prone to unpredictable flare-ups which further impede her mobility.
However, gout is not the only issue that Tammy has with her legs and feet. In January 2020, Tammy told fans via YouTube that she had recently twisted her knee, which became swollen and painful. The pain prompted her to go to the hospital, where doctors told her that she has "no cartilage in [her] knee whatsoever."
8 Amy's Eye Condition
Fans of 1000-Lb Sisters may not know that Amy is legally blind. The younger Slaton sister was diagnosed with toxoplasmosis in her younger years. Amy explains her eye problems in a YouTube video, stating that her toxoplasmosis came from her mom unknowingly handling infected cat feces while pregnant with her. Amy also has astigmatism in her left eye.
Because of these issues, Amy has no peripheral vision in her right eye and no central vision in her left. The condition hasn't been addressed in-depth on 1000-Lb Sisters, but she can be seen wearing a pair of safety glasses to reduce eye strain.
7 Tammy's Dental Issues
As well as her weight issues, Tammy also has a history of dental problems. During season 2 of 1000-Lb Sisters, Chris takes Tammy to visit the dentist. There she confesses to only brushing her teeth a maximum of twice a week.
On top of this, Tammy is also missing two of her front teeth. She attributes the missing teeth to a fall in third grade, but according to SoapDirt, internet sleuths have unearthed yearbook pictures that seem to contradict her story.
6 Tammy Contracts COVID-19
In November 2020, Tammy took to YouTube to inform fans she had just been discharged from the hospital after contracting COVID-19 and pneumonia. In the video, Tammy explains that she was in the hospital for two weeks and put on oxygen to keep her lungs "sturdy," but she also reassures fans that she is doing well and feeling much better.
Nonetheless, fans were deeply concerned. Worry only heightened in January 2021 when, as reported by SoapDirt, TikToks appeared of the Slaton sister vaping despite still being on oxygen. In the sneak peek for season 3 of 1000-Lb Sisters, Tammy can be seen still using an oxygen tank.
5 Amy's Troubled Pregnancy
From the very first episode of 1000-Lb Sisters, Amy made it clear that she wanted to build a family with her husband Michael Halterman. However, doctors warned that pregnancy could be dangerous unless she lost more weight. Despite the warnings, Amy discovered she was pregnant after being rushed to hospital with constipation in the season 2 premiere, "Life-Altering News."
The pregnancy wasn't without complications. Amy had to have a C-section due to a difficult labor. After birth, the baby was taken away by nurses because of low blood sugar. Despite these difficulties, rumors are circulating that Amy is pregnant with her second child.
4 Tammy's Mobility Issues
Another struggle Tammy faces in season 2 of 1000-Lb Sisters is her deteriorating mobility as a result of her weight gain. Viewers watch as she struggles to make it to the mailbox at the end of the street.
Tammy is unable to walk the small distance without the aid of a walker and is visibly exhausted by the time she reaches the mailbox, telling her sister Misty that she needs to sit down. It's a difficult scene for fans of the show to watch and has only increased viewers' worries about Tammy's mobility and breathing issues.
3 Tammy's Struggle With Depression
Throughout 1000-Lb Sisters, Tammy has been open about her struggles with depression. In January 2019, a year before the first season aired, the elder Slaton sister tried to take her own life. The incident spurred Tammy to make serious diet and lifestyle changes as chronicled in the show.
Due to her troubled childhood, physical health issues, and online abuse, Tammy still struggles with her mental health. Her battles with depression and anxiety are documented throughout 1000-Lb Sisters.
2 Amy's High Blood Pressure
Amy experiences a big health scare in episode 4 of season 2 of 1000-Lb Sisters, "Wake-Up Call." The younger Slaton sister is rushed to the hospital suffering scary but mysterious health problems. Amy is so shaken by the pain that she calls Tammy in hysterics, saying that she's too young to die.
In the following episode, "A Fork in the Road," it's revealed that Amy was suffering from dangerously high blood pressure after having leftover Chinese food for breakfast, something that her older sister berated her for.
1 Tammy's Blood Clots
In April 2021, Tammy Slaton was rushed to the hospital after a blood clot traveled to her lung. The incident was nearly fatal, with the 34-year-old put on life support.
Although she's now recovered, it's an issue that has fans seriously worried as it isn't the first time Tammy has battled clots. In the past, she's had blood clots in both of her legs.
