In its third week of playing international markets, Dune has passed a new milestone before releasing domestically. Dune is adapted from Frank Herbert's 1965 novel of the same name. Denis Villeneuve, known for directing films like Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, is at the helm, and he's put together a stellar cast. Timothée Chalamet, Jason Momoa, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, and Javier Bardem are just some of the names lending their acting talents to the film. The movie's epic story follows the noble Atreides family who protects the galaxy's vital spice.
As reported by Collider, Dune brought in another $13.7 million at the international box office in its third week of release, which brings the film to over $100 million. Dune is currently playing in thirty-two markets across six thousand screens, and it's set to add to that number in two weeks when it releases in the United States. However, Dune's domestic release will also see the film streaming on HBO Max in a day-and-date release.
Dune's streaming release isn't the only hurdle the film is likely to face, as it's also releasing against stiff competition. Daniel Craig's final turn as James Bond in No Time to Die was able to earn $119 million at the international box office after a single week of release. While No Time to Die will be in U.S. theaters two weeks before Dune, Bond could still make for a formidable box office foe. Still, Dune is being hailed as a film that should be seen on the big screen. Domestic audiences will finally get to see if Dune lives up to the hype when it releases on October 22.
