Genshin Impact: What The Unknown God’s Real Name Is

Genshin Impact opens with a cutscene of the Unknown God accosting the player Traveler and their twin sibling. From there, the sibling is abducted, while the Traveler is sealed away until shortly before the events of the game. Finding Genshin Impact's Unknown God forms the larger umbrella plot of of the game, as the Traveler runs around Teyvat solving problems, fighting Fatui, and occasionally getting back to looking for their sibling. But just who is the Unknown God?

Very little is known about the Unknown God in Genshin Impact, except that she seems to have a grudge to settle with humanity, and she sealed the Traveler's realm-hopping abilities as part of that. She has also referred to herself as the Sustainer of Heavenly Principles, but beyond that, her true name remains a mystery. For the time being, the Traveler is stuck on Teyvat, and the Archons have so far been cagey when pressed for information. So, even knowing what Genshin Impact's Unknown God’s real name is could prove enlightening at this point.

Some fans on Reddit have already found what appears to be the mysterious Unknown God’s name by looking at Genshin Impact game files. In the opening cutscene, she appears to be labeled as “Asmoday,” which is an alternative form of the demon Asmodeus. And because she refers to herself as the Sustainer of Heavenly Principles in Genshin Impact's opening cutscene, her official name is likely “Asmoday, Sustainer of Heavenly Principles” or something similar. The gods and factions of Teyvat in Genshin Impact are usually not only known by one name, however. In addition to their official names, they also have a pseudonym for when they want to be incognito, as seen with Venti in Mondstadt.

One theory states that adorable Genshin Impact mascot Paimon is secretly Asmoday, the game's Unknown God. This is mostly due to the fact that the ornamentation around Paimon's hair looks a lot like the portal of Genshin Impact's Unknown God. If this is true, then whether through amnesia or a malicious plan, she is in the exact place the Traveler would never think to look. Interestingly, Paimon is also a demon's name from the Ars Goetia, though it must be said that several other characters also take their names from it. So far, this is all the evidence to support this theory about the Unknown God's identity in Genshin Impact, and it could certainly be possible. For now, however, Paimon is still a helpful guide as the player goes through various adventures in Teyvat.

A second Genshin Impact fan theory relies on some knowledge of other miHoYo games since Kiana from Honkai Impact 3rd bears a striking resemblance to the Unknown God. Even her powers appear to be a recolor of Kiana’s abilities as the second Herrscher of the Void in Honkai Impact 3rd. Significantly, the Electro Archon Baal from Inazuma is known as the Raiden Shogun, calling back to Kiana’s best friend and arguable love interest, Raiden Mei, so these coincidences could be real connections. However, it could also just be miHoYo reusing some of its titles and assets from its previous game.

Whether the Unknown God’s name is Asmoday, and if she's actually Paimon or Kiana, remains a mystery and new Genshin Impact fan theories seem to be popping up every day. With the update roadmap for Genshin Impact stretching years into the future, the true answers are likely far off. In the meantime, the Traveler (and players) are inching closer toward the game's conclusion and should learn more about the Unknown God at some point.
