Ghidorah's Ancient Fight With Godzilla In The MonsterVerse Explained

Before his fight with Ghidorah at the beginning of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla had at least two violent encounters with the three-headed dragon in Legendary’s MonsterVerse. That means the two rival alphas Godzilla and Ghidorah have fought as few as five times in the MonsterVerse’s timeline. Three of their battles played out on-screen. Godzilla, who is depicted as an ancient force of nature in Legendary’s movies, has three confirmed Titan rivalries.

During his long life, he’s engaged in heated battles with the MUTOs, fought a war with Kong’s species, and battled Ghidorah. The latter of the three is considered to be Godzilla’s greatest enemy both in the MonsterVerse and in Toho’s movies. Having debuted in 1964’s Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster before going on to appear in several more films, Ghidorah has been featured in more Godzilla films than any other Toho villain and has a well-earned reputation as one of his biggest threats. This reputation was carried over to Godzilla: King of the Monsters, albeit with a twist. It was revealed that Godzilla actually defeated Ghidorah thousands of years ago.

Though much of what transpired in the past between Godzilla and Ghidorah (AKA Monster Zero) is a mystery, some clues have been offered which shed light on the events that led to Ghidorah’s original defeat in Antarctica. Artwork on the walls of King of the Monsters’  secret city illustrated a battle between Godzilla, Ghidorah, Mothra and Rodan. Based on the positions of the monsters in the paintings, it seems that Godzilla, Mothra, and Rodan were all fighting on the same side. Whatever this battle is, it clearly isn’t the same one that Godzilla had with Ghidorah in Antarctica.

Given that the battleground was an icy wasteland, the fight couldn’t have had any human witnesses. The fight with the four Titans must have taken place somewhere else, presumably in the Hollow Earth and in the proximity of Godzilla’s underwater civilization. Against all three Titans, Ghidorah likely lost but obviously lived to fight another day. As for the rematch that occurred in Antarctica, there isn’t any evidence that Godzilla had any allies when he beat him for the second time.

The Godzilla vs. Kong novelization added to the mystery behind their ancient rivalry by suggesting a deeper Hollow Earth connection. It was noted in the book that Ghidorah’s resting place was suspiciously close to the Hollow Earth entrance seen in Godzilla vs. Kong, which hints at the hidden world having something to do with their fight. Godzilla could have chased him out or stopped him getting inside. Either way, there’s no question Ghidorah’s intentions were evil. If his goals were the same then as they were in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, failing to beat him could have resulted in the planet being terraformed, destruction across the globe, and the Titans of the MonsterVerse all bending to his will.
