Eternals producer Nate Moore explains how super speed works in the Marvel film to avoid comparisons to DC’s Flash. As the third film in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chloé Zhao's Eternals is set to release exclusively in theaters on November 5. It stars Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, and Dong-seok Ma, Don Lee, Lia McHugh, and Lauren Ridloff.
Eternals introduces its eponymous group of immortals who were created by the Celestials and sent to Earth 7,000 years ago to protect humanity from their evil counterparts, the Deviants—the Celestials instructed the group not to interfere in any conflict unless Deviants are involved. That being said, Tony Stark’s sacrificial snap at the end of Avengers: Endgame caused a cataclysmic event that is about to release a new horde of Deviants. To meet this threat, the Eternals will reunite and utilize their ability to store and manipulate cosmic energies. For example, Ridloff’s Makkari focuses her cosmic power on speed and reflexes, setting her up as the fastest character in the MCU.
During Screen Rant’s visit to the Eternals set, producer Nate Moore explained how the filmmakers’ visual representation of super speed is different than that of DC’s Barry Allen/Flash. While the Flash is powered by Speed Force, which is depicted in DC projects using lightning, Makkari is powered by cosmic energy, which is what Eternals’ focuses on. Read Moore’s explanation below:
“There's a famous DC character who moves very fast, so for us it's how do we express that visually in ways that are different? We think the notion that each Eternal is powered by cosmic energy can be fun as a visual thing to play with. So, in this case, you see the cosmic energy particles surrounding her. You see that bleeding edge of the sonic concussive blast that she can use in battle, to make her a bit different to what you've seen before.”
With Superman and Flash, super speed seems like a commonality in the DC Extended Universe. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Quicksilver became the first speedster to appear in the MCU. That being said, the portrayal of his speed was arguably derivative of what audiences had seen in either DC projects or Fox’s X-Men movies. With Quicksilver gone (for now), Makkari will not only become the MCU’s first deaf superhero but is poised to become Marvel’s version of Flash. However, based on Moore’s description, Makkari's relationship with cosmic energy probably won't have too much in common with Speed Force.
In Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Flash (Ezra Miller) runs faster than the speed of light, turning back time as the world reassembles itself. This navigation of space and time is essentially how Warner Bros./DC Films plans to apply the multiverse theory to the DCEU in the upcoming The Flash. Disney/Marvel Studios has been hyping the MCU’s multiverse via Disney+’s Loki, What If…?, and upcoming films including Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In the Eternals’ trailers, Makkari can be seen reading books insanely fast, surrounded by items she’s collected throughout history. It remains to be seen if the character’s speed can do more than reduce travel/read time and produce sonic concussive blasts. As of now, Eternals isn’t expected to be a multiverse-heavy film but will surely change the MCU nonetheless.
