Mortal Kombat 12 Roster Art Shows A New Armageddon Mashup

One Mortal Kombat fan is requesting a massive roster for the rumored Mortal Kombat 12 with a character selection screen reminiscent of 2006’s Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Despite some conflicting reports about what Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm is working on next, recent rumors suggest that the next installment of the long-running fighting game franchise is taking top priority over other possible projects like DC Comics’ Injustice 3 or a rumored Marvel fighting game.

Naturally, this has led to speculation about who among NetherRealm’s famous and far-reaching roster of playable warriors will be returning in Mortal Kombat 12, especially since the Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath DLC dramatically shook up the series’ status quo. While many are still hopeful that classic fighters like Raiden can still be featured as hidden unlockable characters in Mortal Kombat 12, others see the new installment as a chance to bring the series into a new direction - or maybe just make a few more Mortal Kombat urban legends canon like NetherRealm did with Smoke and Ermac.

Meanwhile, Twitter user and Twitch streamer Dame Falconstein is hoping that Mortal Kombat 12 features a massive roster of characters spanning the entire Mortal Kombat franchise, as illustrated by the mock character selection screen she posted earlier today. She also tells NetherRealm to “Make the Mortal Kombat 12 roster so damn big that we'll need a magnifying glass to see who's there!” This has led commenters to discuss whether or not newcomers will embrace having to learn over 78 movesets. Others expressed hope that at the very least, fans will stop harassing NetherRealm to include their favorite unused character in Mortal Kombat 12.

These commenters also compared Dame Falconstein’s custom Mortal Kombat 12 character selection screen to the one found in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, which was noteworthy for including virtually every playable combatant who had been featured in a Mortal Kombat game before - even obscure joke characters like Meat and Mokap. It was also the second-to-last entry in the series before NetherRealm rebooted the franchise with 2011’s Mortal Kombat, with the only game in between being the 2008 crossover Mortal Kombat VS. DC Universe.

The Mortal Kombat franchise has had several memorable characters show up over the years, from icons like Liu Kang and Scorpion and new favorites like Cassie Cage to even guest appearances from Rambo and Spawn. Therefore, a roster containing every single one of them would easily dwarf the already gargantuan Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. However, NetherRealm will likely be more selective about who makes the cut in Mortal Kombat 12, especially given the EarthRealm-shattering events of the last game.
