Pokémon Go's annual Halloween event usually proves to be one of the best of the year, and it appears that Halloween 2021 will be no different. With information from the Pokémon Go blog, trainers have an idea of what to expect from the highly anticipated event. Running from Oct. 15 to Oct. 31, Pokémon Go Halloween Mischief has plenty of fun features, some returning from previous events and some new to the game.
Since the event lasts only for a limited window, trainers should try to capitalize on it as best as they can. From previously unreleased Pokémon to new mechanics, this year's Halloween event is sure to be a good one.
Many Ghost-type Pokémon are available throughout the year, though usually much less frequently. During the Halloween event, however, they will be appearing at a highly increased rate. In addition, Yamask only appears during the Halloween event each year, and its shiny is available.
It evolves into Cofagrigus, which, while not one of the strongest fully evolved Ghost-type Pokémon, is a fascinating creature with an excellent shiny. Yamask is obtainable through wild encounters and One-Star raids for both parts of the event and is also available through Field Research, but only during Part 2. Galarian Yamask is also available during the event, but it does not have a shiny in the game yet.
From Oct. 15 to Nov. 2, the Halloween Cup runs alongside the standard cups in the Go Battle League. In this unique format, trainers can use only Pokémon that have Poison, Bug, Ghost, Dark, or Fairy typing.
The CP of these Pokémon is also limited to 1,500. This means that players can use certain Pokémon that may also be on their standard Great League team. Common threats like Drifblim, Azumarill and Ostagoon will likely be present on a large number of teams, so trainers should plan accordingly.
Galarian Slowpoke and Galarian Slowbro entered the game at the beginning of the Season of Discovery in early June 2021, but Galarian Slowking is just now making its debut. While Galarian Slowpoke may be considered one of the worst-designed regional Pokémon forms, Galarian Slowking has a rather interesting concept.
To evolve Slowpoke into Slowking, trainers must have the former as their buddy and catch thirty Psychic-types. While the event focuses largely on Ghost-types, Drowzee, Woobat, and Gothita will be spawning during Part 1. Psychic Pokémon will be harder to come by during Part 2, though, so trainers should try to meet the requirement before it becomes much more difficult.
While Spinarak and its evolution, Ariados, have been relatively common in Pokémon Go for years, their shinies have been absent from the mobile game up until now. During Part 1 of the event, Spinarak is a featured wild encounter and is also available through 7km Eggs and Field Research.
During Part 2, it is only available through 7km Eggs and Field Research, so if trainers want the best chance to obtain the shiny, they should try especially hard during Part 1. Shiny Spinarak will also be available after the event ends, though, so players should not feel dismayed if they are unable to get one during the event window.
As was previously teased with Pokémon Go's most recent loading screen, Phantump will debut during the Halloween event. Its evolution, Trevenant, and two other Ghost-types, Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist, will also be entering the mobile game. However, both evolutionary lines will be debuting in Part 2, so trainers will have to wait until Oct. 22 to acquire them.
Interestingly, all four of these Pokémon are Ghost/Grass-type, which is a type combination that up until this point has not been present in Pokémon Go.
Pumpkaboo is one of the most underrated Ghost-type Pokémon in the franchise, and it has an interesting size mechanic that Pokémon Go will implement. Both Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist will have four different sizes available in-game, and trainers will have to collect all of them to complete the event's collection challenge.
This difference will be visible in the Pokémon models, and whether this new mechanic will apply to other Pokémon with more minor size differences in the future remains to be seen.
During Part 1 of the Halloween event, Mega Gengar will be the featured Mega raid boss. The Ghost/Poison-type is weak to Psychic, Ghost, Ground, and Dark. This is considered one of the best counters to Psychic and Ghost raid bosses, as it boosts the power of Ghost attacks when it is active in a raid. It also buffs Poison-type moves, but it is most useful for the Ghost-type boost.
During Part 2, Mega Absol will be the featured Mega raid boss for the first time. The pure Dark-type is vulnerable to Bug, Fighting, and Fairy attacks. Its viability in raids remains to be seen, but at the very least, it will buff Dark-type attacks when it is active in battle, which is helpful. Mega Absol will also appear more often in Mega raids on Oct. 30-31 for a Special Raid Weekend.
With the new event comes a few costumed Pokémon for trainers to encounter: Halloween Mischief Pikachu, Piplup, and Drifblim, all of which can be shiny. Players can find Pikachu and Piplup as wild encounters and through Field Research during both parts of the event. Drifblim, on the other hand, is obtainable through Field Research only in Part 1, but it is encounterable through Three-Star raids during both parts.
Costumed Pokémon can rarely evolve, making them less popular, but trainers who want to complete a collection of all costumed Pokémon will have plenty of opportunities to obtain good ones.
During Part 1 of the event, Altered Forme Giratina will be available. As a Ghost/Dragon-type, Giratina is vulnerable to Dark, Dragon, Ice, Ghost, and Fairy attacks, so trainers should use counters with these types of moves if they have them. Starting during Part 2, Darkrai will be available in Five-Star raids.
In the main series games, it is perhaps the strongest pure Dark-type Pokémon, and its power transfers well to Pokémon Go, so trainers should come prepared. It is weak to Bug, Fighting, and Fairy attacks. From Oct. 30-31, Five-Star raids featuring Darkrai will appear more often as part of the Special Raid Weekend.
Trainers can earn double the amount of Candy for transferring, catching, and hatching Pokémon, and for trainers who are over level 40, they will get guaranteed Candy XL when walking with their buddy. With the rarity of certain Ghost-types in Pokémon Go, it is often difficult to obtain enough Candy to fully power them up, but this event makes it much easier.
This is also impactful because Candy XL is necessary to power up a Pokémon beyond level 40, so if trainers would like to maximize the power of their buddy Pokémon, this event is a great time to do so.
