The Originals: The Main Characters, Ranked By How Tragic Their Pasts Are

The Vampire Diaries universe is known for heartbreaking scenes, and its sequel series, The Originals, continued to deliver on that front. Considering most of the characters on The Originals first were villains in The Vampire Diaries, it's no surprise that they have a lot of anger and resentment built up inside them.

Even the happiest and most innocent characters have dark pasts and suffered years of tragedy. There are many different species with unique life experiences in The Originals, but one thing they all have in common is tragic backstories.

10 Kol Mikaelson

During Kol's time in both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, he was seen as a dangerous original sibling who often struggled to remain alive due to many factors like his murderous parents, a vengeful Klaus, and other powerful foes.

Kol lived for many centuries despite dying and being resurrected plenty of times. From what viewers saw of his past, he was always a spiteful brother who was jealous of Marcel and didn't fit in with his siblings. It seemed like a lot of his problems were the result of his own reckless actions. When it comes down to it, though, sibling rivalry doesn't rank high in terms of tragedy.

9 Vincent Griffith

Vincent was a powerful witch who was also highly acclaimed. For most of his time on the show, his body was inhabited by Finn Mikaelson due to the return of Esther Mikaelson and her attempts to destroy her surviving children.

While Vincent's life was certainly tragic during his time on The Originals, his life before that wasn't as awful. He was a well-known and liked witch who had a good job and even successfully graduated from college. One of the most horrible things that happened to Vincent was that his wife became obsessed with power and slowly went mad.

8 Camille O'Connell

Camille was introduced as a charming and artistic figure who rivaled Caroline as the best ship with Klaus in The Vampire Diaries. Of course, getting involved with both Klaus and Marcel led her life to become unnecessarily messy.

Not much is known of Camille's life before she met Klaus other than the fact that she lost her twin brother. It was revealed that she decided to visit New Orleans to find out what happened to her brother, leading to her discovery that he was involved with the supernatural.

7 Hayley Marshall

Hayley Marshall was first introduced in The Vampire Diaries. During her time on that show, she became wrapped up in the twisted world of Elena Gilbert and got herself involved with the dangerous Klaus Mikaelson.

From Hayley's brief time on TVD leading to her being part of The Originals, viewers learned that Hayley was a werewolf but was lost from her clan. She had a mysterious tattoo that tied her to her werewolf family, and she was desperate to find where she belonged. She was also rejected by her adopted family after becoming a werewolf, which made her have to grow up on her own.

6 Davina Claire

Davina was one of the youngest people in The Originals, a series that  focused mostly on adult characters. During her time on the show, she becomes rebellious and one of the most powerful witches in The Vampire Diaries universe.

There's not much known about Davina's history or her family other than the chilling fact that she was part of a witch coven that intended to sacrifice her and other teenage girls for more power. Being part of a sacrificial ritual and surviving while losing some close friends is actually quite horrible.

5 Elijah Mikaelson

Elijah was often seen being loyal to his siblings on both The Originals and The Vampire Diaries. It was clear that family was always important to him, as he stood by them no matter how much trouble Klaus brought into his life.

In some flashback episodes seen on The Vampire Diaries, it was revealed that Klaus and Elijah had a love triangle of their own with Elena's doppelganger Tatia. When Elijah turned into a vampire, he accidentally killed her, which was a scarring experience for him. Klaus eventually killed yet another of his love interests as revenge. Over the course of both shows, Elijah lost every woman he ever loved.

4 Klaus Mikaelson

Klaus was the cause of many other characters' problems and the reason why many of his family members had such tragic backstories of their own. He spent years trying to become a powerful vampire-werewolf hybrid, and Klaus was often more of a villain than a hero in The Vampire Diaries.

While his actions are inexcusable, it's worth noting that Klaus spent most of his youth dealing with an abusive stepfather. Klaus was the only one of his siblings to have a different dad, so his stepfather often mistreated him. In fact, Klaus spent years on the run from his stepfather, who often tried to murder him. He also loved the love of his life when Elijah murdered her. Whatever his misdeeds may be, there's no denying Klaus suffered plenty of tragedy.

3 Rebekah Mikaelson

Rebekah did some of the worst things in The Vampire Diaries but later became more likable as viewers learned more about her, especially on The Originals. Rebekah's cruelty is explained when the sequel show dives deeper into her backstory.

As The Originals became a series, viewers learned that Rebekah's life was often controlled by her family, primarily her brother, Klaus. She never had any independence or agency in her own life. Klaus more or less forced her to work for him, threatened her love interests, and mocked her dreams of love and humanity. Any time Rebekah tried to escape Klaus, he would stake her and keep her trapped in a coffin along with the rest of their siblings.

2 Freya Mikaelson

Freya was the newest original sibling introduced in The Originals, yet she was also the eldest. Freya turned out to be an incredibly powerful witch. She was also the only original who never became a vampire.

Freya has torn away from her family in her youth and held captive by her aunt. She was a prisoner for decades and had a spell placed on her that prevented her from aging. Because of all that, she never had a life of her own, met her family, or had any freedom until she was finally discovered and released.

1 Marcel Gerard

Marcel made a name for himself in New Orleans and was basically in charge of every vampire in town. He may have held immense power when viewers first met him on The Originals, but his backstory is incredibly tragic.

Marcel was previously a slave who worked on a plantation. There's not much shown about his family and who they were, but he met Klaus at his brother's funeral, so viewers know that he lost a lot in life. After moving in with the Mikaelson's, he fell in love with Rebekah, but Klaus prevented the two from being together for years.
