What if Creators Address Jeffrey Wright Playing Live-Action Watcher

The creators of What If...? would like to see Jeffrey Wright appear as Uatu the Watcher in live-action. What If...? just wrapped its first season with the final episode titled 'What If... the Watcher Broke His Oath?' which involved Uatu the Watcher gathering the various heroes from prior episodes to become The Guardians of the Multiverse. What If...? is already set for a second season, where Wright will reprise his role.

Uatu the Watcher first appeared in Fantastic Four #13 in 1963 and was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The character has become a vital part of the Marvel Comics universe, having encounters with several heroes, and was a critical part of the 2013 crossover event Original Sin. His appearance on What If...? was long-awaited, and given the status of the character observation the multiverse, many suspected he could eventually appear in the live-action MCU films and series on Disney+.

In an interview with Variety, following the finale of What If...?, series lead writer A.C. Bradley and director Bryan Andrews discussed the possibility of Wright appearing as Uatu the Watcher in live-action. Both are open to the idea but say it is up to Kevin Feige, adding that while they know some of what Marvel Studios has planned, they don't know everything. The full quote can be read below:

Bradley: Jeffrey Wright can play any role he wants, as far as I’m concerned. If he wants to play Sue Storm, sign him up!

Andrews: We love him. It’s up to Kevin. At some point, maybe? Who knows what they have in store. There’s some things that we may know, but there’s a lot that even we don’t know, because they keep it buttoned up. But I’m with the audience. I think it would be amazing to see. I would love to see some random shots where there’s Jeffrey Wright, watching from a distance.

Bradley: Not in costume. In jeans and a sweater, drinking a cup of coffee. He walks in from crafty over to the shot.

Andrews: “Look at this stuff going on right over here!” (Laughs)

A lot of it would also depend on Wright's schedule, as he is a very busy actor over the next couple of years. He is set to play James Gordon in the upcoming DC film The Batman and will lead a spin-off series focused on the character and Gotham P.D. The actor is also currently cast in Wes Anderson's untitled film, which will open in 2022. However, Uatu could appear in an MCU project as a CGI character, and Wright could easily provide the voice as he will with the upcoming season of What If...?.

There are several potential places Uatu could pop up in future MCU stories. Given the multiversal nature of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and how secretive the film's plot has been, there is a good chance Wright's Uatu may make a cameo appearance in that film. Season 2 of Loki will be dealing with the new branches in reality, and Uatu could encounter the god of mischief who made it happen. Given the first appearance of the Watchers as a race was a cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the character could appear in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Of course, with the introduction of the Fantastic Four into the MCU, it would make a certain amount of sense for Uatu to appear in their film, given his comic book history with the team. What If...? could perhaps be the beginning for Wright's The Watcher.
