What We Do in the Shadows season 4 will still feature Kristen Schaal's Guide despite the season 3 finale's twist, confirms executive producer Paul Simms. An offshoot to Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement's 2014 Kiwi-cult movie of the same name, What We Do in the Shadows debuted on FX in 2019. The series focuses on a new crop of vampires - Kayvan Novak's Nandor, Matt Berry's Laszlo, Natasia Demetriou's Nadja, and Mark Proksch's Colin Robinson - as they explore their immortal existence during nightly misadventures on Staten Island. Harvey Guillén also stars in the show as Nandor's familiar Guillermo. What We Do in the Shadows season 3 wrapped up with an explosive finale last Thursday, and work on season 4 is already underway.
What We Do in the Shadows season 3 introduced numerous new characters and mythical creatures to the fold including gargoyles, hellhounds, and sirens. As for the glittering roster of guest stars, it included Aida Turturro as Nandor's love interest Gail, Cree Summer as the wellness vampire Jan, David Cross as Dominicas the Dreadful, Khandi Alexander as Contessa Carmilla De Mornay, and Donal Logue as a fictionalized vampire version of himself. But perhaps the character that stuck around the most was Kristen Schaal's Guide Lady, who had returned for a recurring role after a cameo in season 1's star-studded episode 7, "The Trial."
Now, in a conversation with Deadline, What We Do in the Shadows EP Paul Simms has confirmed that Kristen Schaal would be a part of the series' forthcoming season 4 as well. Simms did not indicate how much Schaal's character will be in the new season. Although Simms was a bit reluctant to give away details about Schaal's return as The Guide, he nevertheless admitted that she won't be the only supporting character coming back for season 4.
Schaal joined What We Do in the Shadows season 3 after multiple teases from the series cast hinting at the return of a beloved character. In the new season, her Guide Lady served under Nadja and Nandor after they became co-leaders of the Vampiric Council. Easily agitated, Schaal's Guide Lady often found herself torn between Nadja and Nandor's contradicting ways of running the council. What We Do in the Shadows' season 3 finale, however, brought a major twist for The Guide, as Nadja and Nandor both quit the Vampiric Council. With the way season 3 left things off, some assumed that Schaal's tenure as The Guide had ended.
While Simms may have confirmed that Schaal is coming back for season 4, the question remains about how her character would fit into the new story. With Nandor and Nadja leaving, there is no one to lead the Vampiric Council, which means that the Guide Lady really doesn't have a job anymore, unless she has herself assumed the position as the Council leader. That is something that fans obviously won't find out until season 4 airs, but at least, until then, they can relish the fact that their favorite character isn't going anywhere. Schaal's Guide Lady really clicked with viewers during this past season, so it will be interesting to see how What We Do in the Shadows season 4 explores her story moving forward.
