Even though most movies have establishing shots of some wildly impressive homes, more often than not, the inside of the house is actually a soundstage. However, there are other productions that go above and beyond, using real homes as the basis of the movies.
Some of those memorizing homes have even been on the market for very rich fans to purchase. Between Michael Corleone's lake house, Kevin McCallister's house of traps, and Tony Montana's over-the-top mansion, these real-life houses have sold for millions.
Given that the movie is about teenagers skipping school, viewers get to see a lot of the characters' houses in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. But there's nothing fascinating about the Bueller family house, except for when Ferris rigged the doorbell to play a recording from him, that is. However, it was Cameron's parents' house that amazed audiences.
Compared to all the other normal suburban houses in the movie, Cameron's house looked like a Bond villain's lair. According to Business Insider, the movie was on the market for five years, and it finally sold for a surprisingly low price of $1.06 million. That isn't bad for a property with a giant museum-like car garage that overlooks a forest.
Many of the best-looking movies are the ones where they use the cities they're based in as characters themselves. The 1993 crime thriller The Fugitive does that in spades, as it perfectly showcases the bustling city of Chicago. One way it does that is with Richard Kimble's contemporary Old Town mansion.
The movie had been on and off the market since 2011, and there was a considerable price cut too. According to Chicago Tribune, the mansion was on the market for $4 million, but it was finally sold in 2018 for just 75 percent of the original asking price at $2.9 million.
The Godfather series is full of exquisite architecture, whether it's the family compound in New York or the opera house in Italy. But one building sticks out as the most luxurious, and that's the lake house on Lake Tahoe, where Michael conducts most of his business in The Godfather Part II.
Calling it a lake "house" is a little deceiving, as it's closer to a mansion than a house, and its price tag is representative of that. According to Insider, just last year, the property was sold for $5.5 million, but regardless of how luxurious it is, there's no forgetting that one of the Godfather's most tragic deaths happened right outside.
Just like The Fugitive, Home Alone is another Chicago-based property, only it's based outside of the city. Being one of the movies that made fans laugh so hard they cried, owning the Home Alone property would feel so nostalgic. And it'd be fun to recreate all the traps that Kevin laid out for Harry and Marv.
Surprisingly, according to the Chicago Tribune, the property had never switched hands and the same owners have stayed with the house ever since before the movie's production. However, the same news source also reported that in 2015, the owners finally decided to sell the property, and it went for $1.58 million.
San Francisco is the second most expensive city to live in in the U.S., and that's why the house Scott Lang owns is one of the things that makes no sense about Ant-Man, especially given he's an ex-con. A house on a similar scale to that is the Hillard residence in Mrs. Doubtfire.
The property is heavily featured in the movie, as Daniel dresses up as a housekeeper just so he can stay in contact with his kids. According to Variety, the beautiful house in the middle of SF was up for sale for $4.45 million. That's a massive increase on the $1.39 million it was bought for in 1997.
The original Scream might be set in Woodsboro, but the actual Scream house where the film was shot is in California, and although it isn't on the market right now, it can be rented on Airbnb. It's a fascinating way to promote the upcoming fifth movie in the franchise, as for any daring fans who chooses to rent the house, the Ghostface Killer will be scaring them all night.
There's even a stained glass window of the Ghostface Killer on the front of the house, which is surely the first of many hints to steer clear of the place. And on top of that, the house is full of '90s nostalgia and references to the original movie.
Just like with the Scream house, though Scarface is set in Miami, the location of Tony Montana's humble abode is actually 90 miles west of Los Angeles. According to Business Insider, the mansion where dozens of men were massacred, including Scarface himself, had been on the market for a year before it was finally sold in 2015.
However, there was a drastic price cut, as the property was sold for $12.26 million despite the owner originally wanting an extortionate $35 million. The mansion is just as over-the-top as it was back in 1983, as it's surrounded by Persian gardens and countless fountains. But, unfortunately, the "the world is yours" ornament seems to have been removed
Another over-the-top mansion from a classic gangster movie, the Beverly House mansion is iconic for one of the most famous scenes of all time. In the movie, the house is owned by acclaimed film producer Jack Woltz, and he wakes up to find his prized's horse's head in his bed.
The film recognizes how grand the mansion is, as several shots show it off before the classic scene. Few people would want to sleep in that bedroom where the shocking event took place, but luckily enough, there are 17 other bedrooms to choose from. According to Fox Business, the mansion was put on the market this year for an astounding $119 million.
Unlike many other movie houses up for sale, the one from A Nightmare On Elm Street is fairly modest, as it's simply a three-bedroom, two-story detached property. However, it still costs a pretty penny, as according to NPR, the house was put up for sale this year for $3.5 million.
It might not be the best place for anybody who is superstitious, as Freddy murdered all of his victims within those walls, but it's still a beautiful-looking property. And it does also come with a guesthouse, which is where most guests would probably prefer to stay anyway.
Another house that was just put on the market this year is the Rhode Island home from The Conjuring. It's again another house that is bewildering as to why anybody would want to step foot in it, considering how the farmhouse in question was haunted in the movie.
The location is riddled with paranormal activity, and given how it stands alone in the middle of nowhere just makes it that much more terrifying. However, it isn't the real Harrisville home, and the $1.2 million price tag is actually very cheap for the 8.5-acre residence.
