Cancelled DCEU Movie Plans Mean WB Is Wasting The Biggest DC Villain

By not proceeding with the intended sequels to Zack Snyder's Justice League or with Ava Duvernay's New Gods, Warner Bros. is now sitting on the king of all DCEU villains—Darkseid. The push for the legendary Snyder Cut was a history-making event in superhero movies, and on top of bringing Snyder's intended version of the movie out for the world to see, it also finally allowed Darkseid's cinematic debut to come to pass. However, Warner Bros. is squandering the potential that this sets up.

Created by Jack Kirby in the early 70's, Darkseid formed the foundation for the entire Fourth World and New Gods corners of DC Comics. He would also become one of the most renown enemies of Superman and the entire Justice League, cementing a legacy as one of the most powerful and popular supervillains in comic book history. Marvel Comics even felt the impact left by Darkseid, with Thanos effectively being Marvel's answer to DC's number one baddie, some much so that Thanos is still the MCU's ultimate villain even after his appearances in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Despite Darkseid's vast potential as a cinematic villain for the DCEU, Warner Bros. is keeping him on the bench. Shortly following the Snyder Cut's release, Warner Bros. CEO Anne Sarnoff declared it to be the end of Zack Snyder's DC trilogy, following Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Warner Bros. also elected not to move forward with Ava Duvernay's in-development New Gods movie, in which Darkseid was to appear, with recent comments by Duvernay suggesting that the studio had cited alleged trepidation relating to the Snyder Cut as the reason why.

In addition to Darkseid's long comic book history, he's been adapted to virtually every other medium DC has taken part in. Darkseid was a major villain on both Superman The Animated Series and the two Justice League animated series' that followed it, amongst many other DC animated shows and movies. Darkseid was also seen in Smallville's final season, has been in numerous video games such as the Injustice titles, and had a long life in action figure form, too. The fact that Darkseid was known to be a major villain akin to Sauron in The Lord of the Rings in the Snyder Cut was among the many factors that drove fans to push for the movie so hard.

Warner Bros. even has casting for Darkseid out of the way with Ray Porter portraying the ruler of Apokolips in the Snyder Cut and numerous other Fourth World characters like Desaad (Peter Guinness) and Granny Goodness also featured. With the studio declining to greenlight Snyder and Duvernay's films, there are currently no known plans for one of the most popular and beloved supervillains of all time to be seen again after the Snyder Cut. With even Thanos being no match for Darkseid, there's no rational reason to leave him out in the cold, especially with the strong reception to Ray Porter's portrayal of him, and where Darkseid could go next in both the sequels to Zack Snyder's Justice League and in New Gods.
