Dancing With The Stars: 10 Cringiest Moments | Screen Rant

Dancing with the Stars is nothing but fun. The dancing is extravagant, the music is great, and the light shows are often spectacular. It's light and frothy entertainment for all the family, with little content to offend or embarrass. But the show has been on the air for nearly 20 years, and, in that time, it has had its fair share of cringey moments.

Some of these moments come from the professional dancers themselves, others from the audience or a misstep by the celebrity in their routine. Whatever the case, they were difficult for fans to watch and some have gone down in history as DWTS' most cringe-worthy moments.

Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte found himself making front-page news in the midst of the 2016 Rio games. Lochte lost major sponsorships after claiming that he was robbed at gunpoint in Rio. Following an investigation, the media, including TIME, reported that Lochte had lied about the robbery - or at least embellished the facts.

Later that year, as Lochte was getting judged for his dancing on DWTS, protestors rushed the stage wearing white t-shirts that had Lochte's name inside the no symbol. Much of this was cut from the final product but watching it on the news the next morning made for fascinating television.

There are those that have gone down as the best Dancing with the Stars routines ever, but there is also a list of the worst routines ever performed on the show. Master P's paso doble undoubtedly belongs in the latter category. In fact, it could very well be the worst performance in the show's history.

Rapper and actor Master P appeared on the show's second season and danced the paso doble to "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood." He scored an 8 (4, 2, 2), and both the dance and resulting judging were incredibly awkward to watch. Watching events unfold, viewers knew they were witnessing Dancing with the Stars history.

Maks Chmerkovskiy has a history with head judge Len Goodman. And it came to a head during one particularly hostile judging segment. Len was critiquing Maks's dance with Hope Solo, saying, "I've been in the business for 50 years." Shooting back, Maks coldly replied, "Maybe it's time to get out."

Len immediately stopped talking and threw his pen down, and both Bruno and Carrie Ann scolded Maks for his inappropriate outburst. He may be one of Dancing with the Stars' best professionals, but in this exchange, Maks displayed true unprofessionalism that was cringe-worthy to watch.

Kirstie Alley appeared on the show's 12th season, dancing alongside Maks Chmerkovskiy. Unfortunately, the two suffered a major setback while dancing to Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's "Over the Rainbow." Maks's leg seemingly gave out, and both he and Kirstie awkwardly tumbled to the floor.

The crowd immediately went silent, and Maks hobbled around the stage in pain while giving the "one second" finger to Kirstie. As cringey as this moment was, it didn't hinder their performance in any significant way, as they still finished second for the season.

This isn't one particular cringey moment, but a host of them. Season 10 saw celebrity mom Kate Gosselin paired with Tony Dovolani, and the two couldn't have made for a more awkward pairing. Gosselin was allegedly very difficult to work and the pair's lack of chemistry was evident from the very start.

All of the rehearsals were difficult to watch, and at one point, Tony even storms away in frustration. He wasn't shy about voicing his displeasure, later saying on Anderson that "there was a lot of therapy involved" after his time working with Gosselin.

Even if season 11 was one of the best seasons of Dancing with the Stars, it will forever be marred by the awkward dog dance from Michael Bolton. Bolton performed a jive alongside his professional partner Chelsie Hightower but made the unfortunate decision to start the dance inside a dog house.

He proceeded to awkwardly crawl after Chelsie, who was luring him with a bone. They were dancing to "Hound Dog," so tried working in a dog theme. However, the attempt just didn't work and it came across as monumentally embarrassing.

Farting can be funny, but certainly not when it's directly in the face of someone else. During rehearsals, Lindsay Arnold accidentally farted directly into David Ross's face while performing a cartwheel.

David laughed it off, but the laughs sounded very forced and insincere, almost as if he didn't want to embarrass Lindsay. Lindsay later claimed "That was the most perfect way I could have farted in your face," whatever that means. The whole thing was rather cute and endearing, but also a little cringey for viewers.

It's incredibly rare for a show's first season to be its best. Many shows have to find their identities and their footings, and Dancing with the Stars was no different. The first season ended in controversy, with Kelly Monaco defeating the far more consistent and higher-scoring John O'Hurley.

As a result, a special rematch was held two months after the series finale, and O'Hurley defeated Monaco, earning money for his charity. It was for a good cause, but it was cringe-inducing for everyone involved - especially poor Monaco, who must have felt like her trophy was undeserved. There's a reason the show has never done another rematch.

Chris Kattan was a cast member on Saturday Night Live and found popularity by starring in A Night at the Roxbury alongside Will Ferrell (which was based on their SNL skit). Unfortunately, professional dancer Witney Carson didn't know this.

Carson had no idea who Kattan was, and the funny man tried to explain by listing off some of his most popular SNL sketches. That must have been enormously embarrassing. It was certainly difficult enough to watch.

Poor Kirstie Alley suffered many mishaps throughout season 12. One of Alley's shoes came loose while she was dancing the waltz, and rather than going on with the show, Alley decided to sit on the floor and attempt to fix it.

Her professional partner Maks was forced to awkwardly dance around her, attempting to keep the proceedings going. The whole ordeal only lasted a couple of seconds, but the gaff was both obvious and embarrassing to watch.
