Eternals Has Second Best Fandango Presales Of 2021 After Black Widow

Marvel's Eternals has the second-highest Fandango ticket presales of 2021. The third film in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Eternals is set to release this weekend on November 5. The film, which was directed by Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao and stars Gemma Chan, Kit Harington, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, and Dong-seok Ma, follows a race of immortal superpowered beings who have lived on Earth and guided humanity for 7,000 years.

Pre-release buzz for Eternals has reached a peak this week, with clips, interviews, and new details surfacing from every direction. Eager fans even posted a synopsis for the film on Wikipedia. Although it was later revealed to be incorrect, that situation certainly shows how hotly anticipated the new project is.

Fandango is reporting that, as of today, Eternals has now bested Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as the film with the second-highest ticket pre-sales of 2021. Both films lagged behind Black Widow, which still holds the number one slot. This news comes on the heels of Eternals landing the MCU its first negative Rotten Tomatoes score, proving that the criticism has not yet struck a blow to the film's prospects.

Phase 4 of the MCU has been instrumental in repairing box office numbers after the substantial toll the pandemic-related theater closures took on the film industry. It makes sense that Black Widow would be reigning supreme over the year, considering that it was among the very first big movies to return to theaters worldwide after the film industry pulled many blockbuster releases from the schedule in March of 2020. However, the fact that all three movies in the top slots are MCU properties spells very good news for Marvel, who didn't release a single project during the entirety of last year.

Given the extreme pre-release success of Eternals, which is introducing a new team of characters to the MCU, it will be interesting to see how Spider-Man: No Way Home fares compared to these other three titles. That film, which is the third in the Tom Holland Spider-Man trilogy, has been at the center of a storm of rumors involving what cast members from previous Spider-Man continuities will be brought back. That combined with its status as an established property might lead it to bust Black Widow's hold over the top slot, so it's certainly probable that all four Marvel movies of 2021 could top the chart at the end of the year.
