Guardians of the Galaxy Director Plays the Drums in Throwback Photos

Director James Gunn plays the drums in throwback photos for "Guardians Inferno," a song he wrote for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy films are favorites for many MCU fans due to their humor, loveable characters, and their '70s and '80s inspired soundtracks. Awesome Mix Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, the soundtracks for the films, both achieved commercial success with Vol. 1 actually becoming certified Platinum.

For the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 soundtrack, Gunn wrote a song with Tyler Bates, the film's composer, titled "Guardians Inferno." The song, which was performed by The Sneepers, even had its own hilarious music video shot in a 1980s style and features a lead vocal performance by none other than David Hasselhoff. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, Pom Klementieff, and Sean Gunn all appear in the music video as various band members and director James Gunn also makes a cameo as the band's drummer.

In a new post on Twitter, Gunn shares some behind-the-scenes photos from the "Guardians Inferno" shoot of him rocking out on the drums. Gunn wears massive sideburns and an '80s outfit and has two dancers doing the robot as he plays. He makes clear in the caption for the post that he's not actually playing drums in the song and reveals that the song now has 30 million plays on Spotify and that the video has over 21 million views on YouTube. The video, which even has a grainy '80s look to it, has just the right amount of cheesiness and fits in well with the Guardians of the Galaxy universe. The fact that Gunn co-wrote a song and appeared in a music video on top of writing and directing both Guardians films just goes to show how much he loves the cinematic world he's created. It seems evident, as well, that the film's stars also love working with Gunn judging by the fun they seem to be having dancing and lip-syncing in silly outfits in the music video.

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 now in production, it remains to be seen whether Gunn and the rest of the cast will partake in anything similar to "Guardians Inferno" this time around. Gunn has gone on record saying that the soundtrack for Vol. 3 is already complete so it sounds like, if he has written another song, it's already been recorded. As Gunn has gone on record saying Vol. 3 will likely be his last Guardians film, it will be interesting to see how the trilogy is celebrated outside of the release of the film. A holiday special is already confirmed to be on the way for next year, but it looks like fans will have to wait and see if Gunn gets back behind the drum kit when the third Guardians of the Galaxy film releases in May of 2023.
