The cast of How I Met Your Father unites in the first image from the highly-anticipated How I Met Your Mother spinoff starring Hilary Duff. Created by Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, How I Met Your Mother ran for 9 seasons and became a huge hit thanks to its unique premise. Following a group of close-knit friends, the series was narrated by Ted Mosby (voiced by Bob Saget and played by Josh Radnor), as he recounted to his children the titular story. Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, Jason Segel, and Colbie Smaulders also starred.
How I Met Your Father will follow a similar premise, with Sex and the City's Kim Cattrall serving as the narrator and older version of Hilary Duff's character, Sophie. The series will premiere on Hulu and also star Chris Lowell, Francia Raisa, Tom Ainsley, Tien Tran, and Suraj Sharma. It will also update the popular format now that dating apps, social media, and more modern conversations factor into the plot.
No premiere date has been set for How I Met Your Father, but Variety has debuted the first look image the cast united on set. Check out the image below:
In How I Met Your Mother, Ted narrates the year from 2030 while the actual bulk of the show takes place in the year it airs. If this is the case for the spinoff, Cattrall's Sophie could be narrating from far in the future once again and it will also provide the much-needed update for How I Met Your Father to remain fresh. Airing from 2005 to 2014, How I Met Your Mother was ending just as social media and dating apps truly began exploding, making it difficult to address in the very adult lives of its central characters.
That will all be different in How I Met Your Father, which could see the cast navigate Tinder, Twitter, and the like. It's also refreshing to see such a diverse cast that is more representative of New York than the original, predominantly white cast in How I Met Your Mother. Although no premiere date has been announced yet, the turnaround for sitcoms like this is rather quick, so it wouldn't be surprising to see the series premiere in the first half of 2022. How I Met Your Father will also herald the return of Duff to the small screen after her canceled Lizzie McGuire reboot. With the cast all together, it will only be a short time before the reboot hits Hulu.
