Masters Of The Universe Retcons Sword Of Power's True Purpose

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Part 2, episode 2, "Reason and Blood."

Netflix's Masters of the Universe: Revelation has introduced a retcon regarding the Sword of Power and the real reason why it is so important to He-Man. It has long been presumed through the various incarnations of Masters of the Universe that Prince Adam required the Sword of Power to transform into his alter-ego, He-Man. This is not the case, but the Sword of Power does serve another important role.

The fate of the Sword of Power lay at the center of Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Part 1, where the legendary weapon was destroyed and He-Man and Skeletor apparently died while fighting over it. This prompted an uneasy alliance between He-Man's allies and Skeletor's followers and a quest to reforge the Sword of Power, which was needed to preserve magic throughout the universe. In the end, the Sword of Power was restored and stolen by Skeletor, as part of his plan to claim the Power of Grayskull for himself.

Stronger than ever, Skeletor taunted Prince Adam in the climax of Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Part 2, episode 1, "Cleaved in Twain," saying that without the Sword of Power Prince Adam was "...no longer He-Man (and) barely a man!" Adam laughed at Skeletor and explained that the Sword of Power was only the conduit for the Power of Grayskull and not the true source of He-Man's power. That came from the spark of heroism within Adam's heart.

Adam proved the point by holding up his hand and shouting "By the Power of Grayskull," triggering his transformation into He-Man. However, when the smoke from the resulting blast of magical energy cleared, Skeletor found himself facing a savage behemoth instead of the He-Man he knew. This confirmed that the Sword of Power did not fuel Prince Adam's transformation from his secret identity into He-Man. It merely regulated how much power he could safely absorb.

This berserker He-Man was comparable to The Incredible Hulk, both in terms of his strength and his temper. Incapable of speech and seemingly governed by rage, he made short work of Skeletor and his undead army, but proved to be as much a threat to his allies as he was to the enemies of Eternia. Teela spent much of Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Part 2, episode 2, "Reason and Blood," trying to calm Adam down to the point that he could give up the Power of Grayskull and return to his normal, reasonable self.

It is said that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. This certainly proved to be the case for Prince Adam, whose behavior in Masters of the Universe: Revelation proved that he did not need the magic sword of He-Man to be a hero. He did, however, need the Sword of Power to prevent himself from biting off more than he could chew.
