Microsoft Is Giving Away $100 Gift Cards, So Check Your Email

With the holiday season fast approaching, Microsoft is giving away up to $100 in Microsoft Store gift cards in a surprise gesture. $100 can go a long way on the Microsoft Store, enabling users to get 10 months of Xbox Game Pass. Users can also opt for a standard $60 game like Halo Infinite or the all-new Forza Horizon 5 alongside a bunch of other indie titles. The cards can also be redeemed towards Surface devices like the Surface Laptop or the Surface Go 3 to get up to a $100 discount. The products were announced back in September and are currently available for purchase on the Microsoft Store.

Promos like this one are not very common from tech companies, especially from Microsoft. While Google does give away Play Store gift cards from time to time, their values are mostly significantly lower than $100. Microsoft, however, isn't believed to have run a similar promo in recent memory, which is why this one comes as a bit of a surprise for many.

On Wednesday, Twitter deals hawk Wario64 (@Wario64) posted about Microsoft sending emails to random users, offering gift cards worth up to $100. The offer seemed too good to be true, which made many wonder if it was a scam. However, Microsoft's official Twitter account is since believed to have confirmed the news to The Verge through a DM, which means this is a legit promo from the company and the gift cards on offer are very real. In that case, they can be redeemed on the Microsoft Store for pretty much anything, including software or hardware. However, Microsoft seems to be hoping that it's the latter, saying "it's time to shop Surface and more".

While many users have since started reporting getting the gift cards, $100 seems to be the highest amount on offer and not everyone is getting that much. Many others on Twitter, like Carlos Bermudez (@CyB3RMUDEZ) are reporting getting only $10, which still buys you one full month of Xbox Game Pass. It will be interesting to see how many people will get the full $100 and how many will have to be satisfied with lower amounts.

Microsoft hasn't yet issued an official statement on the promo, which means it is still unclear as to why the company is sending out these freebies. There's also no word on whether there's an eligibility criteria for these gift cards or if the company is simply sending them out randomly to users. Either way, a little word-of-the-mouth publicity goes a long way in inspiring loyalty among customers and buying some goodwill for the company.
