Nicholas Hoult Recalls Audition For 90210 | Screen Rant

Nicholas Hoult recalls his audition for The CW's 90210, revealing that it didn’t go too well. After breaking through at a young age when he acted alongside Hugh Grant in 2002’s About a Boy, Hoult achieved greater visibility and praise for his performance as Tony Stonem in the teen drama Skins. From there, the actor gradually diversified his filmography by appearing in a wide variety of projects. Most notably, Hoult co-starred in A Single Man, for which he received a BAFTA Rising Star Award nomination. He also played Hank McCoy/Beast in X-Men: First Class, later reprising the part for sequels, and led the romantic comedy Warm Bodies.

Hoult’s career could have included The CW reboot of the seminal teen drama Beverly Hills, 90210. Premiering in 2008, and simply titled 90210, the reboot focused on an entirely different cast but did include recurring appearances by original stars such as Tori Spelling, Jennie Garth, and Shannen Doherty. The new additions included Shenae Grimes, Tristan Wilds, AnnaLynne McCord, Dustin Milligan, Matt Lanter, and Jessica Stroup.

Speaking with THR to promote The Great season 2, which is currently available on Hulu, Hoult revealed that he almost made a stop in television’s most famous zip code. Though he doesn’t specify which character he was auditioning for, Hoult arrived at the 90210 auditions to find many actors around his age vying for a spot on the series. His “heart sank”, it’s noted, as he waited for his turn to be called in. You can read Hoult’s quote below.

“I did one reading, and then they were like, ‘Great, thanks.’ I was like, ‘Should we put it on tape?’ And they were like, ’No, I think we’re good.’”

While it had to have been disappointing at the time to get such a lukewarm response, Hoult moved on to successful films soon after. There were career-defining roles in both A Single Man and X-Men: First Class. But he would also shine with a memorable supporting turn in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, just a few years after 90210 ended on The CW.  These days, as a lead star on The Great, Hoult takes a character that would be utterly unlikable if another performer was tasked with the portrayal and manages to find a way to have the audience on his side — at least to some degree. It’s a culmination of a career where Hoult has played a wide variety of characters.

By contrast, and often unfairly, the young actors who are most known for their time on teen dramas can have a difficult time leaving those portrayals behind. While they are forever linked to one long-running role, the way some performers hope to be, that very fact makes it difficult to find lasting success in other projects and genres. So, in that sense, it worked out for the best that Hoult had a rather forgettable 90210 audition.
