How to Play Red Dead Redemption 2 in First-Person & Cinematic Modes

Red Dead Redemption 2 allows players to play in first-person perspective as well as engage Rockstar's cinematic mode, but how does that work? It's been eight years since developers Rockstar released another Red Dead game, and their previous Grand Theft Auto V was considered nothing short of a masterpiece. Though the game is not without its fair share of controversies, early reviews indicate that Rockstar has another massive hit on their hands.

A lot goes into making an open-world game, but perhaps one of most important aspects is the way that players view the world. Some games opt for a first-person view, while many more recent titles settle on a third-person perspective. While in the past, Rockstar has only provided the option for third-person viewing while playing games like Grand Theft Auto, their previous title took a huge step forward on its re-release on eighth generation consoles. When Grand Theft Auto V released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Rockstar included the ability to toggle between a first and third person perspective.. The addition of said toggle was met with great feedback from fans. Naturally it makes sense that the developers would include it at launch on their following title.

For those wondering how to access the new viewing mode, it's quite simple. For PlayStation 4 players (including PS4 Pro), simply tap on the Touch Pad to toggle between first-person and third-person perspectives. On Xbox One (and Xbox One X), tap on the View Button for the same result. Including this first-person toggle is no small feat. Rockstar has to create animations for both first-person and third-person perspectives, and render the game world for each one. It essentially involves doubling the amount of work that needs to be done by the animation team.

In addition to the first-person toggle, Red Dead Redemption 2 also includes a cinematic camera. This camera moves around, highlighting different sharp or bird's-eye-view angles around the action of the character. Furthermore, it puts the game  in wide screen, with black borders on the top and bottom. It makes Red Dead Redemption 2 a bit more difficult to play (so it's ideal for idling) but it's great for capturing screenshots of the Wild West landscape. To toggle this camera, PS4 players should hold down on the Touch Pad; Xbox One players should do the same for the View Button.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is sure to be a one of the biggest hits of the holiday season. And perhaps one of its strongest inclusions is the ability to go back after several dozen hours of play and start anew from an entirely different perspective.
