Marvel's Moon Knight is Headed For a MAJOR New Event

Marvel Comics is teasing a major upcoming Moon Knight event. Moon Knight was originally introduced as a villain, but over the years he's gradually morphed into Marvel's twisted version of Batman. The son of a Jewish rabbi, Marc Spector left the Marines to become a mercenary. One particular job brought him to an archaeological excavation in Egypt, where he was badly wounded and left for dead. Fortunately for Spector, he was taken to the altar of the Egyptian Moon God, Khonshu, and was blessed with a second chance at life.

Moon Knight's profile is about to get a significant boost. At D23, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that a Moon Knight TV series is in the works for Disney+. But, while the mystical vigilante will make his MCU debut on Disney's new streaming service, he's then expected to swiftly transition to the big screen; there are rumors Moon Knight will go on to appear in the upcoming Blade movie. Marvel seem to be looking for a major actor to play the part, with Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe's name frequently mentioned.

It should come as no surprise, then, that Marvel Comics appear to have plans for Moon Knight as well. Mark Waid's History of the Marvel Universe #6 includes a stunning two-page spread in which Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds, talks about things that are yet to happen. He mentions several events that have been confirmed to be part of Marvel's 2020 plans - and also "the age of Khonshu."

The "Age of" formula has quite a history in Marvel Comics, linked to events such as "Age of Apocalypse," "Age of X-Man," and "Age of Ultron." It's safe to assume, therefore, that Galactus is foretelling Khonshu's somehow coming to Earth and establishing dominion over the entire planet. Note that the panel shows a brief glimpse of Khonshu in human form, rather than in his usual animalistic avatar. That suggests he'll take on a host, probably through possession.

Although Khonshu is traditionally viewed as Marc Spector's benefactor, the Egyptian god has frequently been portrayed as an antagonist for Moon Knight rather than an ally. In fact, in one arc, Khonshu appeared to be behind an attempt to drive Spector insane in order to hollow out his mind so he could become a vessel for the Moon God. So this cryptic reference may not indicate that Moon Knight is about to get a power-up of some kind; rather, it may instead mean that he's about to face the greatest threat of his life.

The History of the Marvel Universe #6 is on sale now in comic book stores.
