WARNING: SPOILERS for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker finished General Hux's arc, but we've see his story before and better with Agent Kallus' in Star Wars Rebels. One of the new characters introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, played by Domhnall Gleeson, General Hux had an intense rivalry with Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) in terms of hierarchy in the First Order. Both were jacking up to be Supreme Leader Snoke's (Andy Serkis) true right-hand man. Of course, that didn't matter much longer with the mysterious figure surprisingly dying in Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, leaving Kylo Ren to assume his leadership position.
After a year of Kylo Ren leading the First Order when The Rise of Skywalker picked up, Armitage Hux had been relegated to just another one of the generals of the organization. With General Pryde (Richard E. Grant) even coming in, he felt powerless more than ever. In the hopes of regaining control over the First Order, Hux apparently fed the Resistance valuable information, effectively making himself a traitor. He revealed himself to Poe (Oscar Isaac) and Finn (John Boyega) eventually, but he said that he wasn't motivated by a change of heart but rather his eagerness to see Kylo Ren defeated.
Hux's arc in The Rise of Skywalker may seem familiar for fans of the Disney XD series Star Wars Rebels. Created by Dave Filoni, Star Wars Rebels saw one of the series' main villains, Alexsandr Kalllus, suddenly become a spy for the Rebel Alliance. This change was done over the course of the series, with Kallus realizing that he wasn't anything more than just an operative for the Empire.
Serving as an Imperial operative, Kallus had a few run-ins with the Ghost Crew, including a significant one between him and Lasat warrior, Zeb. The pair was trapped in the frozen moon of Bahryn where they're able to have a conversation without getting in each other's throats. In fact, they even formed an unusual camaraderie as they worked together to survive. This instance was the turning point in Kallus' arc. After seeing how his friends genuinely cared for Zeb's safety while the Empire disregarded him, he began his transition to be a Rebellion ally. Kallus eventually assumed the codename Fulcrum - used by secret source who fed intel to the Freedom Fighters.
Like General Hux's betrayal to the First Order was uncovered by Pryde, Kallus' scheme was discovered by Grand Admiral Thrawn. But instead of getting killed right away, Star Wars Rebels continued his narrative with the Ghost Crew, staging a rescue mission. They were successful in their endeavors, resulting in Kallus becoming a full-fledged Rebellion member. He was instrumental in the succeeding battles and even participated in the Galactic Civil War that led to the Empire's loss. Star Wars Rebels may have been primarily geared towards kids, but it has among the best character stories in the franchise. General Hux's turn in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker may have been surprising to some, but viewers of the four-season animated show would've had an idea of his turn thanks to Agent Kallus' arc.
