Vikings: Why Helga Was Killed Off In Season 4 | Screen Rant

Vikings has seen a lot of characters come and go, and while some got what they deserved, others remained loyal until the end, making their deaths truly heartbreaking. Such was the case of Helga (Maude Hirst), Floki’s wife and a character very popular among fans due to her loyalty and compassion. Created by Michael Hirst, Vikings debuted on History Channel in 2013 and is currently enjoying its sixth and final season.

The series initially followed the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and his Viking brothers, but it gradually shifted its focus to Ragnar’s sons and their own travels, making them the protagonists of the series. Very few characters from season 1 have made it to the final season of Vikings, among those Floki (Gustaf SkarsgÃ¥rd), though the last time viewers saw him, he got trapped in a cave.

Floki hasn’t had the smoothest arc in Vikings, and like many other characters in the series, he isn’t neither a good guy nor a bad guy – it all depends on the circumstances. Floki is devoted to the Gods and lives to serve them, and truly believes they have control over what happens to him and his surroundings. With that in mind, the Gods are definitely not happy with how he has lived his life, as they have thrown some heartbreaking events his way, such as the death of his wife, Helga.

Helga was Loki’s lover who turned into his wife after learning she was pregnant. Despite all the raids, battles, and Floki’s unstable personality and mental state, Helga remained loyal and loving to him. They had a daughter, Angrboda, who died of a fever in season 4, an event Helga wasn’t able to fully recover from. Later on in the season, Helga and Floki came across with Tanaruz, a Moorish girl from Spain whose parents were killed by Viking raiders. Helga adopted her, but Tanaruz had a very hard time adapting and grew very afraid of both Helga and Floki – but especially Helga. During a raid on England, Tanaruz stabbed Helga and seconds later killed herself. Not long after, Floki found her and Helga died in his arms.

Unlike other Vikings characters that were killed off for behind-the-scenes reasons, Helga’s death was because her character’s arc required it, as well as Floki’s. By the time Helga died, Floki had already lost his best friend (Ragnar) and his daughter, and the death of his wife was the final push he needed to fully submit to the will of the Gods. In an interview with Variety in 2017, Hirst shared that, although heartbreaking (mostly because Helga was played by his daughter), her storyline had come to an end. Both Helga and Floki were destroyed by the death of their daughter, and it was Helga’s time to go. Floki definitely wouldn’t be the same if Helga was still alive, and if there’s something Vikings fans can be sure of is that every major death in the show has happened for a reason, and Hirst has it all carefully planned.
