Person of Interest: How Finch & Reese Found Their Dog, Bear

How did Reese (Jim Caviezel) and Finch (Michael Emerson) end up with Bear in Person of Interest? Bear, a Belgian Malinois, was the team’s loyal canine companion for four seasons of the CBS series. Though friendly to the main characters, Bear was generally hostile to anyone he perceived to be a threat to Reese and Finch. Dogs of his particular breed are known for their intelligence and aggressive behavior, which is why they’re often used by militaries from various countries, including the United States.

Bear lived in the library, which was the original headquarters for Reese and Finch when they were tracking numbers provided by the Machine. One of the reasons why Bear was kept there was for Finch’s protection. As a military-trained animal, Reese knew Bear was capable of keeping most threats to Finch’s safety at bay. And that's why Bear was at his side during some of their most dangerous situations. After they had to give up the library, the team made the abandoned subway station their new base at the beginning of season 4, and it became Bear’s new home as well. At the end of the series, when Reese died and the mission ended, Sameen Shaw (Sarah Shahi) became Bear’s new owner.

Bear was introduced in the season 2 premiere when Reese was trying to rescue Finch, who had been kidnapped by Root (Amy Acker). During his search, Reese encountered a gang of criminals who had Bear with them, after killing Bear's previous owner. Due to their weapons and numbers, they held the advantage against Reese, but that changed when Reese noticed the dog. He told the gang he could see Bear was a military-trained Belgian Malinois, who only responded to commands in Dutch. Fortunately for Reese, he could speak fluent Dutch.

Reese turned Bear on his new owners and took the dog with him, along with millions of stolen bearer bonds he had recovered from the gang. Later, Reese had to leave the dog alone in his car, and when he returned, he found that the animal had eaten the bonds. For this reason, Reese chose to give him the name “Bear”. Shortly after rescuing Finch, he made the decision to leave Bear with Finch, as the incident with Root caused Reese to become more concerned than ever about Finch’s well-being.

Before long, Bear developed a strong sense of loyalty to both characters, and in later seasons, Shaw and Root. He appeared in several episodes of each season, as he was always hanging around their base, whether it be the library or the subway. Since Person of Interest was a show about former government assassins, cops, and gangsters, it contained a rather dark and serious tone, and Bear often served the purpose of lightening the mood, such as the times when Finch would catch him eating the library’s oldest books, when they had to bathe him, and when he licked their donuts. Their loyal canine companion, who stole the hears of both the viewers and everyone on the team, even succeeded in bringing out different, softer sides of the main characters.
