Grand Theft Auto Online is offering double XP for missions related to in-game Galaxy Super Yachts as part of its Superyacht Life event. Grand Theft Auto Online originally released in October 2013 as the online multiplayer component for Grand Theft Auto V, which is one of the most financially successful entertainment products of all time and currently the second best-selling video game ever.
GTA Online was a very divisive product at launch. Some critics complained about a litany of technical difficulties and bugs, while others praised its freedom and open-ended gameplay. The game has been receiving regular updates in the seven years since it came out. One of these, the Executives and Other Criminals update, added yachts to the game when it was added in 2015. Three models of Galaxy Super Yacht were added to the game, each costing millions of in-game dollars. At the time, they were the most expensive things a player could obtain. However, fans quickly grew disappointed with the vessels because, not unlike yachts in real life, they served little practical purpose other than flaunting one's wealth.
Developer Rockstar recently launched its GTA Online summer update, which adds a host of new content to the game. Among this content is a new string of co-op missions called A Superyacht Life. Each of these missions is offered by the NPC who captains the player's yacht, and they seem to be a good way for players to get more value out of their immense yacht investment. To further incentivize yacht gameplay, Rockstar is adding a new opportunity to the game. This new event sees players getting double XP rewards for taking part in Superyacht Life missions, as well as an in-game t-shirt for those who complete all six of them. To help get more players engaging with yachts, the vessels and their upgrades are currently 30 percent off, as are all other boats in the game.
In addition to these nautical developments, Rockstar has tripled rewards for participating in the Trap Door adversary mode, and doubled rewards for Transform races. It's also offering expanded rewards for players who connect their social club accounts to Amazon Prime, including a sizable sum of in-game cash, a free nightclub, and huge discounts on cars including the X80 Proto and the Gauntlet Hellfire.
Rockstar's history with its online games is rocky to say the least. While these games are certainly capable of bringing in huge player numbers, Rockstar isn't always ready to deliver the best content it can. This has especially been true in Red Dead Online recently; a minor patch crashed the game completely for a lot of players, and was only recently resolved. But the significant amount of content that game has been receiving since its major Naturalist update is a good sign, as are these summer events in GTA Online. Aspiring criminals have a lot to look forward to if they want to make the millions of dollars they sunk into their massive yachts worthwhile.
GTA Online is available as part of Grand Theft Auto 5 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
