Director Denis Villeneuve's Dune has wowed audiences and critics with its powerful story and visually stunning shots. A lot of work obviously went into getting every little aesthetic detail right, including the characters' outfits.
Aside from its gripping plot and memorable characters, the cast's several gorgeous costumes are something fans won't soon forget. From Baron Harkonnen's extremely long dress to Lady Jessica's vibrant ensembles, the best outfits from the film stand out as unique artworks in themselves that help audiences understand Dune's characters and world better.
8 The Sardaukar Armor
Any fight scene with the Sardaukar involved looks like it came straight out of some of the best action movies of all time. The Emperor's army is made up of the finest and most skillful warriors across the Imperium, reserved only for the toughest battles and crucial missions.
This is why it's slightly disappointing to see the vicious fighters' outfits pale in comparison to other great ensembles featured in the film. The Sardaukar wear ill-fitting clothing that looks more like astronaut suits than intimidating armor. They've definitely prioritized function over form in this case, which is understandable given their risky jobs.
7 Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam’s All-Black Ensemble
Although Reverend Mother Mohiam of the Bene Gesserit only appears briefly in the film, her daunting presence and strong personality make her a memorable character. She wears dark clothing every single time she's featured on screen, with one outfit, in particular, standing out among her few scenes.
Fans likely won't forget her all-black garb from when she meets Paul for the first time. It's her headpiece that really draws viewers' attention, as the big ornate hat and beaded veil perfectly match her unnerving persona. That said, the actual dress she wears isn't anything too special and its repetitive pattern looks somewhat gaudy and out of place.
6 The Imperial Court Members’ Robes
When members of the Imperial Court arrive to formally announce House Atreides' stewardship of Arrakis, fans see one of the most beautiful shots in Dune. There's a moment when their huge ship lines up with the blue carpet as the doors open and the passengers start to come out.
The close-up shot of the Imperial Court members gives audiences a better view of their elaborate attires. They wear white helmets, with an opaque dome covering their faces. The dome itself is gorgeous, with its stunning orange color fading to white towards the top. Their white robes are embellished with gold details that match the gold scepters they carry. Because it's such a brief scene, viewers don't get a chance to fully appreciate these outfits, which will hopefully make an appearance in a sequel in the future.
5 Baron Vladimir Harkonnen’s Long Dress
Fans can't be blamed for feeling a bit nervous every time Baron Harkonnen shows up in the movie. His presence is meant to make viewers uncomfortable and one of the ways he achieves that is by emphasizing his unnatural height.
Since the Baron has to rely on his suspensors to move around, he seems to defy gravity whenever her stands up. The first time he gets up is particularly creepy, as the bottom half of his long dark dress creates the illusion that he's ridiculously tall. The clothing by itself isn't too impressive, as it's more of a minimalist dress with a silver pattern on the chest area. It's the way he carries it and how it complements his character that makes it truly distinct.
4 Lady Jessica’s Formal Blue Dress
Lady Jessica's relationship with Duke Leto is highlighted in the scene where they knowingly look at each other as the Emperor's representatives approach. She understands as much as he does how important this formality is, as it cements their transition of power.
As usual, Jessica is dressed impeccably for the occasion. Her pastel blue dress fits her perfectly and its tiniest details – from the carefully placed sequins to its subtle patterns – work well together without looking overdone. Her matching cape helps soften the look, which would probably be the best in the entire movie if not for her even better ensemble in a later scene.
3 Paul Atreides’ Golden Armor
One of Dune's wildest moments happens towards the end of the movie when Paul sees a vision of himself as a formidable fighter. Viewers don't see his face as he defeats one enemy after another in the desert, right until he turns around and his mask lifts to reveal his blue eyes.
Audiences who don't get too distracted by everything his blue eyes imply might notice that he's wearing a shiny new suit. The golden armor is reminiscent of the expensive gear players get when they reach the final stages of a video game. This may be too flashy for some fans, but it makes sense that he would be wearing a powerful new ensemble in the future – he is destined to follow the path of the Kwisatz Haderach, after all.
2 Lady Jessica’s Orange Dress
When the Atreides Flagship lands for the first time on the alien planet of Arrakis, Lady Jessica and her personnel make a striking first impression. Her outfit steals the show as she walks through the sandy landscape of her new home, with the two women behind her holding up her cape as it flutters due to the strong winds.
Jessica's vibrant orange dress and matching cape is her most memorable costume from the movie. Fans get to see its embellishments up close when she boards the Thopter and reveals her face, which is partially covered with a luxurious golden metal veil that extends down to her shoulders. It's an intentionally symbolic outfit that's likely meant to reflect House Atreides' power and wealth. It does become a tad unruly when her assistants let go of her cape, but it's a sacrifice that's well worth it for a great first impression on the family's new territory.
1 The Stillsuit
The Stillsuit is undoubtedly the most iconic outfit in Dune, as it's a costume straight out of the book series. It combines both form and function to help its wearers endure the unforgiving deserts of Arrakis. It's nearly impossible to survive for long periods in the deserts without it.
The all-black suit is designed to preserve and recycle a person's body moisture. It absorbs sweat and urine and then filters out impurities before feeding the liquid back into its catch pockets, which can then be accessed by its wearer. It also has a mask that acts as a filter, with a tube that attaches to the nose to allow for better breathing out in the sandy dunes. Liet Kynes explains this process to Duke Leto at one point, proudly remarking how anyone wearing a Stillsuit in "good working order [...] won't lose more than a thimbleful of moisture a day." It helps that its rugged design and stylish details make anyone look badass while wearing it.
