Succession Season 3 Cast Guide: New & Returning Characters

The cast guide for Succession season 3 features many returning characters along with a few new notable additions including an Oscar-winning actor. After the pandemic stalled filming last year, the highly-anticipated season 3 is now a year overdue after filming in New York City, East Hampton, Virginia, and Italy including one episode directed by Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan.

The Emmy-award-winning series follows the scathingly disloyal and treacherous affairs of the Roy family as they battle for who will take over the family business. Succession season 2 ended with Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) publically usurping the family throne, revealing his media-mogul father’s knowledge of a sexual misconduct cover-up in the company’s cruise division. The third season will pick up moments after this event, with the trailer showing a disconnected Roy family. Kendall and Shiv (Sarah Snook) are seen talking conspiratorially and may prove to be the united rebel forces. Shiv, however, is also seen with Logan (Brian Cox), seemingly comforting him in his time of need, and then again, this time fighting with Kendall. Tom Wambsgams (Matthew Macfadyen) and cousin Greg (Nicholas Braun) nervously pivot and angrily thrash in the turbulent waters left by the cruise ship scandal. Meanwhile, things may turn around in Succession season 3 for Roman Roy (Kieran Culkin), as he is shown making alliances with a major Succession newcomer. Finally, in a shocking turn, the eldest Roy son and perpetual coaster, Conner (Alan Ruck), seems to be making a play for the role of CEO - a role he seems ill-suited for and has previously been disinterested in claiming.

What they are all fighting for remains unclear as Waystar Royco is underwater following the scandal and is quite possibly a sinking ship. It could be the Roy family is not fighting for the company throne at all, but only to best each other. Here’s every character returning to Succession season 3, the new characters preparing to enter the fray, and the actors who play them.

Succession patriarch Logan Roy is played by Brian Cox, CEO of Waystar Royco. Logan is the father of Conner, Kendall, Siobhan (aka Shiv), and Roman and he frequently pits them against one another. He is incredibly clever and ruthless, traits he uses to manipulate his children and he has also passed down to them. Cox is one of the most recognizable character actors with over 200 acting credits. He has played notable roles like Ward Abbott in The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy and William Stryker in X2: X-Men United. Most recently he played Death on the series Good Omens and Hunter on From Now.

Played by Jeremy Strong, Succession’s Kendall Roy is a complex character. A self-proclaimed visionary, Kendall wants to modernize WayStar Royco and the first step is removing his father as CEO. But Kendall, like his siblings, also seeks his father’s approval and love. Kendall makes multiple attempts at the throne, but after accidentally causing the death of a waiter at a party, Logan seizes the opportunity to control Kendall again and Kendall spends most of season 2 strung out and obeying Logan’s every demand. In the season 2 finale, Logan tells Kendall to sacrifice himself to save the company and Kendall agrees – until the final moments of the episode when he implicates his father in the company’s sex-scandal cover-up in a televised press conference. Jeremy Strong played The Big Short’s Hamish Linklater and was seen most recently as Jerry Rubin in The Trial of the Chicago 7. Other credits include The Gentlemen, Molly’s Game, and Dr. Art Dreesen in the series Masters of Sex.

Sarah Snook plays Siobhan “Shiv” Roy, the only woman in the dynasty. In Succession season 1, Shiv works as a political consultant, is in a steady relationship with Tom Wambsgams, and seems to have a distaste for the family business. In season 2, however, Logan tempts her by promising her the company following his resignation, and Shiv’s competitive side emerges. Shiv’s ruthlessness is revealed when she offers her now-husband, Tom Wambsgams, to the Roy family as the corporate sacrifice. Sarah Snook starred in Pieces of a Woman with Vanessa Kirby and Shia LaBeouf and the series Soulmates, as well as An American Pickle with Seth Rogan.

Kieran Culkin plays Roman Roy, youngest of the Roy offspring. A wise-cracking, slacker type seeking more power than he’s earned in season 1, Roman surprises everyone in season 2 when he facilitates a major deal for the company overseas, while being held hostage by terrorists. He emerges as a dark horse when his insights on the deal prove his business acumen and possibly save the company. Culkin is best known for his role in Igby Goes Down in 2002. He was also in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Movie 43, and Wiener-Dog.

Alan Ruck plays the eldest of the Roy children, Conner, and where he will wind up in the Roy family civil war is uncertain. Conner enjoys the luxury Waystar Royco affords him, without ever having been involved with the company. He dates Willa, an aspiring playwright who is less interested in Conner than in what he can provide for her and her career. In season 2, he decides to run for President, a move that makes him look like a buffoon and aggravates the rest of the family, particularly Logan. In the Succession season 2 finale, Logan agrees to fix the reviews of Willa’s failed show and preserve Conner’s livelihood in exchange for Conner agreeing to forgo his candidacy. Seen in legendary films like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Speed, and Twister, Ruck’s more recent credits include War Machine and Gringo.

Actor Matthew MacFadyen plays Shiv Roy’s romantic partner, the buffoonish Tom Wambsgams. An executive at Waystar Royco, Tom is abused by the family, including Shiv who proposed an open marriage on their wedding night and agreed to offer him as the company’s sacrifice when they needed a skull to wave after the scandal. Tom is Greg’s mentor and abuses Greg in much the same way the family abuses Tom. Recently seen in the award-winning film, The Assistant, MacFadyen may be most well-known for his role as Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.

Nicholas Braun plays Greg, grandnephew to Logan and cousin to the Roy children. He begins his work with Waystar Royco in season 1 and has a friendly but complicated relationship with his mentor in the company, Tom Wambsgams. The Charlie Brown of the series, Greg is generally optimistic, naïve, and very out of his league among the double-dealing, backstabbing Roy Family. In a shocking turn, cousin Greg may be the biggest schemer of them all, as the possessor of the papers that Kendall uses to show his father’s wrongdoings at the end of season 2. Braun recently appeared in The Big Ugly and Zola.

Hiam Abbass as Marcia Roy: Abbass plays Logan Roy’s third wife, Marcia. Marcia watches everything and misses nothing. She does not trust Logan’s children and they do not trust her. Abbass is known for her role in Blade Runner 2049.

Justine Lupe as Willa: Justine Lupe plays Conner Roy’s girlfriend, Willa, an aspiring playwright. She is disregarded by the Roy family, though Conner seems invested in their relationship (far more than Willa). Justine Lupe has been in multiple hit television series including Snowfall, Sneaky Pete, Madam Secretary, Mr. Mercedes, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and the Non-Essentials.

J. Smith-Cameron as Gerri Kellman: General counsel of Waystar Royco and a powerful, yet subtle character in Succession, Gerri Kellman is played by J. Smith-Cameron. Gerri’s role grew in season 2 as Roman developed a closer relationship with her. J. Smith-Cameron is in the series Divorce with Sarah Jessica Parker and is known for her role as Joan alongside Anna Paquin and Matt Damon in Margaret.

Arian Moayed as Stewy: Stewy, played by Arian Moayed, is an associate of Kendall’s that has been in the show since the first season. He is as disloyal and treacherous as the Roy family themselves. Moayed is a fellow alum of two shows also acted in by Justine Lupe – Madam Secretary and Mr. Mercedes – and is best known for his roles in The Accidental Wolf and Rock the Kasbah.

Other returning cast for Succession season 3 include The Walking Dead: World Beyond’s Natalie Gold as Rava Roy (Kendall’s ex and the mother of his children), and Annabelle Dexter-Jones (seen in Under the Silver Lake and HBO’s The Deuce) as Kendall’s girlfriend Naomi Pierce. Naomi comes from Waystar Royco’s rival family and is the source of further tension between Kendall and Logan throughout season 2. The Waystar Royco team will see the return of Juliana Canfield as Jess Jordan; Dagmara Dominczyk as Waystar’s head of PR Karolina; Peter Friedman as Frank, and David Rasche as Karl.

Oscar-winner Adrien Brody will join Succession season 3 as billionaire Josh Aaronson, another person after the keys to Waystar Royco. Brody earned his Oscar portraying Wladyslaw Szpilman in 2002’s The Pianist and has since had many notable roles including Salvador Dali in Midnight in Paris, Henry Barthes in Detachment, and Dmitri in The Grand Budapest Hotel. His recent television credits include Luca Changretta on Peaky Blinders and Captain Charles Boone on this year’s Chapelwaite.

Lukas Mattson is played by Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd. In the trailer, he is seen discussing Logan’s death with Roman, but it is unclear what alliances he will make. SkarsgÃ¥rd is undoubtedly best known for his roles on True Blood and Big Little Lies, the latter for which he won a Primetime Emmy. Most recently, he’s played Randall Flagg in the series The Stand and Nathan Lind in Godzilla vs. Kong.

Other actors that will be joining Succession season 3 include Alien vs. Predator’s Sanaa Lathan as lawyer Lisa Arthur and two-time Emmy nominee Hope Davis as Sandy Furness. Linda Emond (from Lodge 49) will also join the cast as White House aide Michelle-Anne Vanderhoven. Finally, Mortal Engines actress Jihae Kim will be playing PR representative Berry Schneider.
