Sex Education may not be exclusively about the adults, but Jean and Jakob’s story is just as important as any of the teen romances in the series. Jean Milburn and Jakob Nyman became a couple in season 2 of the original Netflix show and, although they’ve had their rough patches throughout, season 3 elevated their story even further.
Sex Education season 3 once again turned its focus to the students of Moordale and their various interpersonal relationships. Otis Milburn and Maeve Wiley were still trying to figure things out after a big blow up that nearly dismantled their friendship in season 2; Adam Groff and Eric Effiong were dating, but still struggled with various issues, and so on. The teens’ love lives were tumultuous and central to the series’ narrative, but the writers devoted a good amount of time to explore Jean and Jakob’s relationship, which had also hit a speed bump after Jean slept with her ex-husband. Season 3 of Sex Education saw Jean and Jakob trying to make things work in the midst of Jean’s pregnancy. The couple even went to therapy to sort through their feelings.
The series has always treated sex, identity, and relationships with respect and Jean and Jakob’s is no different. It’s rare that adults get as much of a focus on their relationships in a teen show; shows like Dawson's Creek, Riverdale, and On My Block (among several others) didn’t linger on the adults for nearly as long as their younger counterparts. However, exploring the ups and downs of Jean and Jakob’s relationship in Sex Education is crucial because it showcases how they navigate the challenges of romantic relationships into adulthood. But it isn’t just about the challenges. Jean and Jakob are shown to love each other deeply and passionately; they also have a very active sex life. That’s important to note because the media so often turns its attention to youthful romances, but it’s equally as beneficial to tackle adult relationships and all that they entail.
Sex Education does a tremendous job with showing the ways in which Jean and Jakob continue to grow as individuals and as a couple, as well as revealing their heartaches and insecurities along the way. For Jakob, that includes trust issues, while Jean struggles with intimacy beyond the physical. The series even delves into how the past affects Jean and Jakob’s relationship in the present, suggesting therapy is a healthy outlet at any age. People don’t stop evolving or loving as they grow older, so it’s pertinent to highlight the characters’ experiences and romantic relationships, serious or otherwise, alongside the teens’ romantic trysts.
Sex Education understands this more than most teen shows because, while Jean and Jakob are given a lot of attention, the stories of Maureen and Michael Groff (as well as some of the other adults), are also portrayed in multilayered ways. What the future holds for Jean and Jakob in Sex Education season 4 remains to be seen. It’s possible the result of the paternity test could ruin all the hard work the pair put into repairing and advancing their relationship in season 3. Whichever direction their story goes, however, viewers can expect Sex Education to continue offering a nuanced look into their relationship.
