Psych 3: This Is Gus features an important scene between Henry Spencer and Carlton Lassister, remembering that the two are one of the series’ best duos. While Shawn and Gus inarguably take the cake for Psych’s best pairing, the series has a few other important duos whose dynamics make the show so enjoyable. Aside from partners in stopping crime Juliet O’Hara and Carlton Lassiter, Shawn’s former-detective father Henry and frenemy Lassie have one of Psych’s most iconic friendships.
While Shawn, Gus, Juliet, and Karen are preoccupied with uncovering Selene’s true identity and stopping her ex-boyfriend, Lassiter and Henry’s conflict in Psych 3 is confined to sharing a beer back home in Santa Barbara. After having moved into Henry’s old house, Lassiter’s policeman life in Psych’s movie sequels has changed substantially from the series. Having suffered a massive stroke ahead of Psych 2: Lassie Come Home, Lassiter’s detective skills are rusty, and he wonders who he is without his job description. In a heartfelt scene, Henry comes over and shares a beer with his old friend, reminding him that he’s a good man and he’s much more than just a cop, especially since he’s still a hero to his daughter, Lily.
Considering Lassiter and Henry are the only main Psych characters still living in Santa Barbara, it’s not surprising they still have a close friendship in Psych 3. They always had a very underrated dynamic in the original series, with both having backgrounds as stern, old school cops. Additionally, the two Psych 3 characters were the most significant antagonistic yet loving relationships that Shawn had, making it even funnier when Henry and Lassiter ganged up on him. While they didn’t always get along, Henry and Lassiter had a mutual respect for police work not typically shared by the other characters, which was most significantly demonstrated in a flashback from Psych season 3. As a young beat cop, Lassiter idolized Henry as a successful detective, which is something the two wouldn’t admit to now because of their pride, but goes to show how much respect they have for one another.
Psych 3 typically confines Henry and Lassiter’s story to their one-on-one dinner, which is partially due to the limitations of Timothy Omundson’s mobility from his real-life stroke. By adjusting his story to address his life trying to balance family and work, Peacock's Psych 3 pairing him with Henry allows the show to make a perfect parallel to the struggles Henry had navigating young Shawn and his profession. In this way, it was really only Henry who could convince Lassiter that he was so much more than his job - someone older with similar experiences and whose opinions he genuinely respects.
In an interview with Vulture, Timothy Omundson revealed the porch scene with Lassiter and Henry in Psych 3 stems from his personal emotions through his recovery journey and real-life conversations with Henry’s actor Corbin Bernsen. As an actor who has long been in the business, Omundson listened with open ears to Bernsen’s advice, who told him that Tim as a new actor “can be even better than before.” Just as Omundson and Bernsen hold a professional and friendly relationship based on respect, Lassiter and Henry are reflecting this same dynamic.
Considering Henry was hardly involved in Shawn and Gus’s Psych 3 scheme and Lassiter is no longer Juliet’s partner, it was important that Peacock’s movie give them a scene to show that they still have a counterpart close to home now that everyone else is in San Francisco. Now that the two are entering emotionally taxing eras in their lives, their dynamic will continue to change, but will always be the soft-hearted grouches that criticize Shawn’s immaturity. With the cast wanting several more movies after Psych 3: This Is Gus, audiences can expect more adventures with Henry and Lassiter as an iconic duo.
