Marvel Reveals the Real Source of All Magic in Its Universe

Warning: contains spoilers for The Defenders #4!

The Marvel Universe is full of powerful sorcerers, such as Doctor Strange and the dread Dormammu, and now the true origin of the magic that fuels them has been revealed in Defenders #4, on sale now in print and digital Doctor Strange and his team of Defenders travel back to the Fourth Cosmos on their quest to stop Doctor Zota from destroying all creation—leading to a stunning revelation about magic’s true beginnings.

Doctor Zota, a criminal from the future who uses both science and magic in his schemes, is traveling back through time, through previous incarnations of the universe, in a bid to undo all reality. Doctor Strange hastily assembled a new team of Defenders to help him stop Zota: the Masked Raider, Cloud, Harpy, the Silver Surfer and Taaia, the mother of Galactus. In issue three, the team landed in the Fifth Cosmos, a universe of pure magic, where its laws and principles were first discovered. The Defenders defeated Moridun, the first Sorcerer Supreme, and after Harpy summoned the Green Door, the team found themselves up against a four-faced green creature bearing an uncanny resemblance to the Incredible Hulk. The Defenders are now in the Fourth Cosmos, a universe of heroic archetypes that will resonate through the remaining cycles of creation—but the team also makes a discovery about the Fourth Cosmos, one that sheds light on the origin of magic. The issue is written by Al Ewing, with art by Javier Rodriguez and letters by Joe Caramagna.

Using their powers of communication, Cloud is able to crack the language barrier standing between the Defenders and the denizens of the Fourth Cosmos. After Cloud convinces them to work together, the team is visited by The Pilgrim, who describes itself as “the Sentience of the Fourth Cosmos…the True Believer.”  The Pilgrim reveals it will take a new form, and the energy it sheds in the process will do two things: first, it will help send the Defenders back to the Third Cosmos to continue their pursuit of Zota, who gave them the slip in this issue as well. Secondly, it will help create the Fifth Cosmos—the source of all magic in the Marvel Universe.

The Defenders #3 made it clear the Fifth Cosmos was the true beginnings of magic; it was a universe of pure magic and the place where beings such as Moridun laid down its laws. However, the origin of the Fifth Cosmos, and what made it the source of magic in the first place, had not been revealed until now. Every incarnation of the Cosmos ends with its Sentience shedding its form, a move that brings that cycle to an end and sets the stage for the next. In this case, Pilgrim’s “death” unleashed the energies that would create magic in the next cycle, ensuring its place in future cycles as well. It was only fitting that Doctor Strange, considered one of magic’s greatest champions, was present to witness its birth.

As the Defenders continue their trip to the First Cosmos, AKA the first Marvel Universe, they are seeing the foundations for the world they know laid before their eyes, and in Defenders #4, they learn the true origin of magic.
