Marvel's Spider-Man Player Parodies Avengers' Clunky Web-Swinging

One Marvel’s Spider-Man player recreated the slower web-swinging mechanics from Spidey's appearance in Marvel’s Avengers to humourous effect. Insomniac's take on Marvel's most legendary hero was praised for a multitude of reasons when it launched on the PlayStation 4 back in 2018, including how it handled Spider-Man's trademark ability to swing over the streets of New York City on a thin strand of spider silk. Players could jump, flip, and soar through the air in Marvel’s Spider-Man with a level of speed and fluidity rarely captured in the video game medium before, and Insomniac would refine these mechanics even further in the 2020 spin-off Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

In contrast, Spider-Man’s web-swinging in Marvel’s Avengers is much slower and more mechanical, with Spidey’s webs seemingly attaching to an invisible ceiling due to a lack of tall structures and players needing to see the wall-crawler’s swing-and-flip animation play out in full before starting another swing. This last detail makes building steady momentum while web-swinging all but impossible in Marvel’s Avengers, and while developer Crystal Dynamics' version of Spider-Man has been met with a warm reception by some players, others find themselves preferring the sleeker and faster transversal offered up by Insomniac's Marvel’s Spider-Man series. Even Spidey’s recent appearance as part of Fortnite's new Chapter 3 Battle Pass has been seen as superior to Marvel’s Avengers, with players noting that Spider-Man can web-swing around the newly-flipped Island with a surprising amount of fluidity.

Reddit user J-jay510 recently made light of the perceived clunkiness of Spider-Man’s web-swinging in Marvel’s Avengers by recreating it in Marvel’s Spider-Man. In a brief gameplay video posted to r/SpidermanPS4 (via Game Rant), J-jay510 deliberately stifles Spider-Man’s momentum while swinging through New York by holding onto each swing longer and using Spidey’s web zip to prevent themselves from building up any speed between swings. This is a slight exaggeration of the web-swinging mechanics found in Marvel’s Avengers done for comedic effect, but even some of the players who enjoyed the transversal in Marvel’s Avengers have found J-jay510’s video to be funny at the very least.

Spider-Man’s web-swinging mechanics are far from the only controversial element of Marvel’s Avengers, which has struggled to win gaming fans over since it first launched to lukewarm reception last August. Publisher Square Enix reportedly took a significant financial loss due to the poor sales of Marvel’s Avengers last year, and Crystal Dynamics was recently at the forefront of a new backlash when it was forced to remove paid consumables from Marvel’s Avengers due to concerns that it might foster a pay-to-win system. However, Crystal Dynamics is still committed to providing new missions, costumes, and playable heroes to Marvel’s Avengers, with Crystal Dynamics Senior Brand Manager Nick Edwards promising a new roadmap of DLC for the game in 2022.

Spider-Man’s web-swinging in Marvel’s Avengers has proven controversial among players, especially in comparison to the more fluid mechanics offered in Marvel’s Spider-Man and Fortnite. While fans may argue about whether these comparisons are fair given Marvel’s Avengers’ burden of accommodating an entire team of heroes rather than tailor its mechanics around one particular character, at least some players like J-jay510 are capable of finding humor in pointing out where Marvel’s Avengers falls short in its portrayal of Spider-Man’s most famous ability.
