Assassin's Creed Odyssey Gameplay Video Showcases Medusa Boss Battle

It's time for Alexios and Kassandra to tool up and take on Medusa, Queen of the Gorgons, in some new gameplay footage from Assassin's Creed Odyssey. With Ubisoft taking the long-running action-adventure series to the sun-baked shores of Greece, a whole host of mythical monsters are ready for battle.

Despite 2007's Assassin's Creed exploring the Third Crusade, fans have come to expect a trip around the world as the franchise has been everywhere from the French Revolution to Ancient Egypt. As Assassin's Creed Odyssey goes back further than ever before to focus on the Peloponnesian War, it looks like the pages of history have offered up an expansive backdrop and plenty of boss battles to fill the game's runtime.

The Medusa footage is courtesy of Seattle's PAX West and is a tour of what Assassin's Creed Odyssey can do. Sticking a shiny helmet on Alexios as he draws his sword, the 30-minute video starts with some naval gameplay on the island of Lesbos and moves onto horseback as Alexios heads to the Petrified Temple . Although the footage was first shown a few weeks ago with Kassandra taking on the snake-haired horror, the latest video emphasizes the different fighting styles and personalities of the two characters.

Games in Ancient Greece are nothing new, so it's only natural that some fans will compare the battle to the Medusa fight from 2005's God of War. While Sony Santa Monica recently moved God of War to Norse Mythology in this year's reboot title, the series' roots are steeped in Greek Mythology. It's unfair to compare a game that is already 13 years old to Assassin's Creed Odyssey, meaning it is up to players to decide which Medusa fight is more fun.

The footage boasts Odyssey's impressive graphics and unique combat style while also showcasing how Ubisoft has moved away from its sometimes stuffy historical accuracy. It is refreshing that developers are willing to add a little more fantasy to Assassin's Creed to rival the likes of God of War. Also, showing off some late-game footage is a smart move from Ubisoft to keep the hype for Assassin's Creed Odyssey going ahead of its release next month. Taking on the stony-faced Medusa is sure to be a highlight of the game, but if this is what developers can do with a mid-level boss, imagine what the final battle will be like.

With Assassin's Creed Odyssey hoping to follow in the footsteps of last year's Assassin's Creed Origins, fans are promised another title with a shifted focus towards an RPG-style of making decisions. Either way, tackling angry gods atop Mount Olympus or locking horns with a Minotaur, Assassin's Creed Odyssey looks to be another ambitious trip to the past for some sword-swinging slaughter.
