Warning: This article contains MATURE content
DC Comics has decided to censor the nude Batman in Batman: Damned #1 in all future physical print copies of the comic book issue. DC Comics recently launched their new label called DC Black. Black is set up to specifically tell “mature” stories set in the DC Universe. In that sense, it’s very similar to Marvel Max, which told special Deadpool stories as well as created the character of Jessica Jones.
To begin DC Black, the comic company explores one of their oldest and most popular characters, Batman. Batman: Damned #1 begins with the death of The Joker and very bloody Batman. Yet that isn’t the reason that Damned is calling a stir. The real talking point is the full-frontal nudity of Bruce Wayne, which will no longer exist.

CBR reports that DC Comics has come to the conclusion that the nudity is actually too mature for their imprint. DC Comics obviously can't do anything about the issues that already exist. However, Batman’s genitals won't appear in every future psychical copy of Batman: Damned #1. The decision was made because according to the statement given to CBR, the nudity wasn’t “additive to the story.” This is a natural progression of a previous editorial decision made by DC. Before release, DC Comics decided that all digital copies of Batman: Damned #1 would have altered panels to hide Bruce Wayne’s nudity. Now both physical and digital copies will have the same panels.
Though much has been made of the nudity in Batman: Damned #1 it’s not a very big moment in the issue itself. In context of the issue, Bruce Wayne comes back to the Bat Cave after a dangerous excursion as Batman. Bruce strips off his Batman suit and in one panel his genitals can be clearly seen, albeit covered in shadow. With the censorship, now that entire section of Batman’s body will be covered by a black shadow. This would be the case for any non-Black Label comic.
DC’s response to the nudity has still been rather bizarre. Obviously DC Comics decided very early on that Batman’s nudity wasn’t appropriate to the overall story of Batman: Damned #1. The view isn't unfounded. The moment where Bruce Wayne strips is one of great turmoil and emotional upheaval for the character. Batman is more a wreck than usual in Damned. The fuss and jokes that have been made about the nudity are entirely antithetical to the tone of the series and scene. However, it does seem odd that DC didn’t come to the decision to censor the nudity before the psychical printing.
Interestingly DC’s response and the censorship of the nudity has made it a much bigger deal than it would’ve been originally. Now Batman’s nudity in Batman: Damned #1 isn’t just a weird moment of comic history, the nudity has become a collector’s item. Anyone who has the original uncensored printing are in the possession of something that'll become increasingly rare.
