After years of build up and weeks of speculation, the news has been confirmed by none other than Kristen Bell herself: Veronica Mars is returning - again. The beloved UPN series about a snarky teen detective lasted for just three seasons before it was canceled by the network in 2007. But it just won't stay down.
In 2013, a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign from show creator Rob Thomas brought the long-dead neo-noir mystery back into the mainstream conversation. In 2014, the Veronica Mars film was released, showing the eponymous character, played by Bell, as an adult who has given up her sleuthing to become a lawyer. She returns to her hometown of Neptune, California, and becomes wrapped up in yet another mystery.

The film was well-received, but it wasn't enough as fans continued to demand more Veronica. Though news of the revival has been circulating for months, with reports of a Veronica Mars revival at Hulu surfacing last month, Bell has made things official with a video on her social media accounts. And there's more than just the new season to look forward to: Bell excitedly tells her fans that the original three seasons will be available to stream on Hulu as of summer 2019. See her video announcement below.
Hulu's official statement confirms that in addition to the TV seasons, the feature film will also be available for streaming. Though there is no release date yet, we did get a few more details from Hulu, including a brief synopsis of the eight-episode revival season:
Spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town’s lifeblood tourist industry. After Mars Investigations is hired by the parents of one of the victims to find their son’s killer, Veronica is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pits the enclave’s wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.
This premise might look familiar to the most dedicated of Marshmallows: Two canon Veronica Mars novels penned by Thomas were released following the film, and the plot of the first of those, The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line, is similar to this. If Thomas is using the book as source material, then there's a good chance the whole gang is getting back together: Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring), Dick Casablancas (Ryan Hansen), Wallace Fennel (Percy Daggs III), and Cindy "Mac" Mackenzie (Tina Majorino) all make appearances in the story.
Of course, we'll have to wait and see who is on board as more information is released. At present, Hansen has been recurring on the TV Land sitcom Teachers while starring as a version of himself on the meta action-comedy Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television on YouTube Premium, but the other Veronica Mars cast members aren't quite so busy: Dohring's iZombie character bit the dust, Majorino's Scorpions was canceled, and Daggs appears to have just a short film in the works. These actors have shown excitement for their characters and Thomas' projects in the past, so it's likely only a matter of time before we learn who else is on board, and what's in store for Veronica Mars season 4.
