The Defenders season 2 may be more likely than recent evidence suggests. Marvel and Netflix spent two years building their corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to get to their own crossover. The Defenders marked the conclusion of that goal, as Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) teamed up to stop The Hand. They were ultimately successful over the course of the eight-episode miniseries, but the reception to the show wasn't as good as hoped. As a result, the heroes have gone their separate ways to do followup seasons of their solo shows.
The results of the solo series have varied, but Netflix and Marvel continue to pump them out at a quick pace. This has kept fans wondering if another season of The Defenders was coming, and those prospects appeared to be slim after a complete rebranding of the series' social media pages.

EW spoke to Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb about the potential for a second season of The Defenders recently. After mentioning how the fallout of the series may be felt through the various solo shows, Loeb was asked about the status of another season and if they've officially decided to not move forward with it. He said, "No, all we’ve ever said is that there are no plans right now [to do more]. It doesn’t mean that it’s off the table. And it doesn’t mean that it even has to be with the original characters that were in the first Defenders." The end of this quote caught the attention of the interviewer, as they asked Loeb to elaborate on the potential for future seasons starring different heroes:
There are lots of Avengers, and through that, you should be able to ascertain that there may be lots of Defenders. No one at any time referred to them as “The Defenders” — they didn’t wear a little “D” on their belts, and they didn’t go to a building that had a big “Defenders” [sign] in the air. They were four mismatched heroes who were joined by a lot of the other heroes that are in the stories that we do on Netflix, but that was that particular story.
Loeb may be keeping the door open right now, but there has been no evidence that suggests another season of The Defenders is on the horizon. The cast have all expressed their interest in doing the crossover again, but it is ultimately out of their hands. With Netflix ultimately the ones making the call, they view individual seasons of the four different shows higher than delayed releases to those series for a short crossover.
However, the idea of adding some new blood to future seasons of The Defenders is exciting and maybe the avenue they eventually explore. Jon Bernthal's Punisher wasn't included in the original installment and could help the team out next time. While the miniseries did feature Colleen Wing (Jessica Henwick) and Misty Knight (Simone Missick), both would be more equipped to help now. A future season could also bring Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor) into the fold as she now has her Hellcat powers. The addition of Punisher and Hellcat with elevated roles for the Daughters of the Dragon could fit nicely around all or just a few of the returning heroes. We'll have to wait and see what Netflix decides, but don't count out more seasons of The Defenders just yet.
