Fox's X-Men spinoff The New Mutants is undergoing some massive reshoots right now, but costar Anya Taylor-Joy feels they will ultimately result in a better movie. Mutant fans may recall that the film (an adaptation of the X-Men comic book offshoot created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod) was originally set to open in theaters back in April, before Fox delayed its release date until August of 2019 and set writer/director Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) to work on additional photography.
While the future of the X-Men movie franchise is now in flux thanks to Disney's ongoing acquisition of Fox, the New Mutants reshoots are carrying on business-as-usual and may encompass as much as half of the movie's initial cut, according to some reports. For her part, Taylor-Joy (who plays Illyana Rasputin aka. Magik, a mutant who possesses sorcery-like powers) feels the reshoots will ultimately bring the film closer to the vision that Boone pitched to her and her costars in the first place.

In a recent interview with Collider to promote The Miniaturist TV mini-series (which she stars in), Taylor-Joy offered brief updates on her upcoming projects, including M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable and Split sequel Glass. Naturally, the subject of New Mutants also came up, with Taylor-Joy saying that getting to play Magik again is "just great" and the actual movie will deliver the goods, which is "the most important thing". With regard to how the reshoots have affected the film's tone, she had this to say:
I think we’re making the movie that we set out to make, in the beginning. That’s what we’re going to end up delivering to people. It feels like the movie we all signed up to do, which is good.
Taylor-Joy's comment is in line with what was reported about New Mutants earlier this year, when the film's reshoots were first announced. By the sound of things, Boone had originally envisioned the film as being a true horror movie (albeit, one set in the X-Men universe), but his early cut was tonally closer to the mainline X-Men films released before it. However, in the wake of the horror genre's recent gains in popularity and the positive reception to New Mutants' horror-flavored teaser trailer last year, Fox reportedly decided to give Boone the go-ahead to reshoot a hefty chunk of the movie and bring it closer in tone to the Stephen King-esque scary coming of age story he had in mind to begin with.
While it remains to be seen if Fox's "gamble" ultimately pays off and results in New Mutants becoming both a critical and commercial success, it's encouraging to hear that the final version should be closer to Boone's original creative vision, like Taylor-Joy says. Seeing as the X-Men franchise will enter a new era regardless of the outcome here (once the Disney/Fox deal is finalized and the X-Men join the Marvel Cinematic Universe), now is as good a time as any to experiment with the property and find out if a spooky entry like New Mutants can even really work.
