Supernatural Season 14 Trailer: Dean Just Isn’t Himself These Days

Incredibly, season 14 of Supernatural will get underway in October, and The CW has the first trailer for the next leg of the Winchester brothers’ never-ending adventures. Of course, the new season begins with some changes in store for the demon-fighting siblings as Dean (Jensen Ackles) has recently undergone a personality change since allowing the archangel Michael (of Apocalypse World) to inhabit his body in order to defeat a supercharged Lucifer at the end of season 13. That means Ackles will not only have a chance to play a different character on the long-running series, but he’ll get to do so dressed as a character from Newsies.

The series has pretty much run the gamut with regard to the terrible fates that could possibly befall Sam and Dean, and since they’ve both died and come back to life, been possessed, or turned into a demon, finally making good on the promise of Dean being Michael’s perfect vessel seems like the right way to begin the 14th season. And as the new trailer suggests, having an archangel running around in a Dean suit is not good for anybody, least of all Dean.

Though it’s a fairly brief trailer, there’s quite a lot packed in. It looks as though while Michael is out and about, Sam (Jared Padalecki) is back at the bunker dealing with the leadership vacancy in Hell, while Castiel (Misha Collins) and Jack (Alexander Calvert) debate the ethics of killing Dean to take out a homicidal angel from another dimension. All the while, Michael appears to be up to no good, ending things in a butcher’s apron asking a group of captive women, “Who’s next?”

By now it should come as no surprise that Dean and Michael won’t be sharing the same body for too long. But that shouldn’t damper the fun that will likely be had in the episode (or episodes) that involve Ackles exploring this most recent development that has him embodying an all-powerful being. After things get back to normal, though, it will be interesting to see what sort of lingering effects there are, both for Dean and for the other characters. It certainly looks as though Michael is going to leave his host with some cleaning up to do, and that could make things tough on Dean for the rest of the season.

Whatever happens will inevitably play into the question of just how much longer Supernatural will be a part of The CW’s lineup, and whether or not hitting the 300 episode mark will be the beginning of the end for the Winchesters.
