Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn is reportedly eyeing Brad Pitt and Rachel Weisz for roles in his planned prequel film, Kingsman: The Great Game. Back in August it was reported that a whole Kingsman shared universe is in the works, with plans for a third Kingsman film as well as a TV series and a movie spinoff built around the Statesmen in addition to a movie prequel.
Based on the Kingsman: The Secret Service comic by Mark Miller and Dave Gibbons, Vaughn's 2014 Kingsman: The Secret Service introduced movie audiences to the enigmatic British spy agency. The story revolved around a Royal Marines drop-out named Gary "Eggsy" Unwin (Taron Egerton) as he was recruited by the Kingsman and joined agent Harry Hart (Colin Firth) in battling evil hacker Richmond Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson) and his prosthetics-wearing henchwoman Gazelle (Sofia Boutella). Last year saw the arrival of a sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which like the first film leaned heavily on over-the-top comic book action as well as classic James Bond spy movie tropes.

As Matthew Vaughn prepares to dive back into the Kingsman universe for a prequel film exploring the early days of the mysterious agency, THS reports that the director is eyeing some very big names to take on prominent roles in the new movie. Brad Pitt and Rachel Weisz are reportedly both being sought by Vaughn as he looks to beef up the star power for his shared universe film. Ralph Fiennes and Harris Dickinson were previously reported to be joining the cast as well - the latter in the role of the film's youthful main protagonist, Conrad.
According to THS, The Great Game will be set during World War I and will feature several fictionalized versions of real life figures who played a major part in shaping that historical period. Among these characters is Grigori Rasputin, the famed "Mad Monk" who used his almost mystical powers of manipulation to gain the ear of Russia's Czar Nicolas and his wife Alexandra. THS says Brad Pitt is at the top of the studio's list to play Rasputin, a man who was known for his insatiable sexual appetites as well as his hypnotic personality. The film is also seeking actors to play Archduke Ferdinand's assassin Gavrilo Princip as well as famed female spy, Mata Hari.
Rachel Weisz, meanwhile, is reportedly in line for the role of Polly, the mother of main hero Conrad. Another key figure yet to be cast is the mysterious character of Shepherd, who is somehow involved with Princip. Vaughn clearly is going for some major historical revisionism à la Tarantino as he folds all these real-life characters into a fictional origin story about the Kingsman agency. Vaughn says The Great Game will shoot back-to-back with his planned third Kingsman film, which has yet to receive an official title. So with Kingsman 3 set to go before cameras beginning in January, it won't be too long before The Great Game is set to get underway as well.
