Live-Action Star Wars TV Show Rumor: Dave Filoni & Alan Taylor To Direct

The upcoming live-action Star Wars TV show reportedly will have episodes directed by Dave Filoni and Alan Taylor. As Lucasfilm nears the end of their current film slate with J.J. Abrams' Episode IX in production, they're working on expanding the galaxy far, far away's outreach in other mediums. One project of note is a television series spearheaded by Jon Favreau, which will air exclusively on Disney's streaming service in 2019.

All has been relatively quiet on this front since it was first announced, with rumors suggesting it will take place on Mandalore following the Empire's fall. However, some official details should be revealed shortly, as the creative team is gearing up to start production. It's been known for months Favreau is heavily involved, but he's going to have help from some of the industry's biggest names. Now, viewers might know who else Lucasfilm is calling upon to bring this project to life.

Making Star Wars reports there will be a total of five directors participating in the show's first season, with three of them helming two episodes apiece. They say Filoni will direct two, marking his first foray into live-action after his acclaimed work on The Clone Wars and Rebels animated series. DiscussingFilm also states Alan Taylor is onboard. It's currently unknown who will direct the pilot, with Favreau and Filoni deemed the likeliest possibilities.

This trio is quite strong and definitely qualified for the task at hand. Filoni is well-versed in Star Wars lore, studying under no less than George Lucas. His intricate knowledge of the franchise canon should be a valuable asset for the show, and it's great to see Filoni get an opportunity to spread his wings after proving his worth in animation. While film fans know Taylor for the much-maligned MCU installment Thor: The Dark World, his television credentials speak for themselves. Taylor is a Game of Thrones alum, just coming off an Emmy nomination for his work on the episode "Beyond the Wall." And he not only has experience with big-scale fantasy (a must for Star Wars), he's also great with intimate character drama. Taylor won an Emmy for directing the "Kennedy and Heidi" episode of The Sopranos and received another nomination for Mad Men. Favreau, of course, launched the MCU with Iron Man and wowed audiences with his Jungle Book remake.

It'll be interesting to see who else Favreau recruits for the other two slots, but he's got a solid foundation. It's encouraging Lucasfilm is going for top-tier directing talent for the live-action show, as they have a fair amount riding on its success. Once Episode IX releases next December, Disney is planning a slowdown on the film side of things, which means TV will be the top priority. It's imperative the series connects with audiences, as it could fill the gap between cinematic outings and provide fans with the new content they crave should it be renewed for additional seasons.
