As of 2004, it’s estimated that over 20 million people have played D&D since its inception, with over $1 billion spent on game equipment and books. With it’s long and storied history, here are 10 Dungeons & Dragons campaigns that would make great movies.

10. Waterdeep: Dragon Heist

Released in 2018, this 5th Edition adventure outlines one of the major cities along the Sword Coast - Waterdeep. It’s a racially diverse setting that would lend itself well to the big screen. There are rival gangs, sinister villains, mystery, and murder that all culminates in a frantic heist that has already delighted players around the world. With so many options presented in the adventure, the story could even be teased out into a miniseries that delves into characters who hide terrible secrets as well as the mysterious origins of an abandoned pub.

9. Red Hand of Doom

This 3rd Edition adventure from 2006 follows a group of adventurers who have entered a sparsely populated frontier region called Elsir Vale. They discover a massive hobgoblin horde that is fanatically devoted to the 5-headed dragon goddess Tiamat and led a half-dragon warlord named Azarr Kul. To defeat the horde, they will have to unite the inhabitants of the Vale against an army of hobgoblins, giants, and dragons. This would make for a very action-packed movie that would do well against any summer blockbuster.

8. Castle Amber/Château d'Amberville

Set in the fictional French province of Averoigne, this D&D Expert Set adventure from 1981 has the main characters explore the haunted Amber Family mansion, or “Château d'Amberville”. While en route to Glantri, the party finds themselves drawn into a large castle surrounded by an impenetrable, deadly mist. The only way to escape is to explore the castle. Hidden within its walls are tormented members of the d'Amberville family and other hostile creatures, as well as a portal to the wilderness of Averoigne. Only there can they reach the inter-dimensional tomb that holds the secret to breaking the curse and returning them home.

7. The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh

Another adventure from 1981, this time for the Advanced D&D Set, takes place in a mysterious abandoned mansion at the edge of a town called Saltmarsh. Despite rumors of a long-forgotten treasure, mysterious lights and ghostly hauntings have kept would-be treasure hunters at bay. This is the Scooby Doo of Dungeons and Dragons adventures and is family friendly enough to appeal to a wider audience than some of the more arcane and horror-focused entries on this list. Speaking of which...

6. Tomb of Annihilation

Another 5th Edition adventure from 2017 places the main characters in a race against time to discover the cause of a death curse. Being brought back from the dead isn’t an uncommon practice in the world of Dungeons and Dragons. However, a wasting disease is afflicting everyone who’s ever been revived. People are mysteriously growing thinner and weaker each day until one day they pass away - forever. Religious temples and scholars of divine magic are baffled, and it’s up to the main characters to find the cause and end the curse.

5. The Isle of Dread

This starter adventure that comes with the D&D Expert Set, released in 1981, is another straightforward adventure that would appeal to a large audience. After discovering a fragment from a ship’s log that describes a mysterious island rumored to hold great treasures, the protagonists set out to find and explore it. In the course of their exploration, they find a number of other villages of unfamiliar intelligent creatures, numerous hostile monsters, and pirates. Reminiscent of Kong: Skull Island, they find prehistoric creatures as well. Near the center of the island is a hidden temple inhabited by monstrous, mind-bending creatures.

4. Out Of The Abyss

The Underdark is a vast subterranean realm inhabited by all manner of strange and sinister creatures. It is also the setting of this 2015 adventure for the 5th Edition of D&D. As they search for an exit, they discover that various demon lords. The party escapes, but are called back by leaders in a Dwarven settlement who task them with leading a war band through the Underdark in an effort to stop the demons from destroying the world.

3. Temple of Elemental Evil

Published in 1985, this Advanced D&D adventure begins in the village of Hommlet, situated near the site of a past battle against evil forces operating from the Temple of Elemental Evil. The main characters travel through Hommlet and are drawn into a web of conspiracy and deception. While the citizens of Hommlet initially appear warm and hospitable, it is soon learned that many of its inhabitants are powerful spies for minions of evil. This story can be spun into a spy-action-thriller with ease.

2. Ravenloft/Curse of Strahd

Who doesn’t love a good vampire flick? This module was so well loved when it was released as Ravenloft in 1983 for Advanced D&D that it was revised and expanded three times. The most recent iteration is called the Curse of Strahd and was released for 5th Edition in 2016. Centered around the titular Count Strahd von Zarovich, this adventure brings the protagonists to Castle Ravenloft. The mechanics of this adventure allow for several different motivates for Strahd and any of them would make for an excellent vampire-themed romp.

1. Queen of the Spiders

This super-module, released in 1986 for Advanced D&D, is actually a combination of seven smaller modules that form an integrated campaign that begins in the World of Greyhawk, continues underground into the Underdark, and concludes in the Demonweb Pits - the lair of the demonic spider-goddess Lolth. This is the adventure that makes a trilogy. Easy divided into giants, Drow, and the spider queen; this adventure is everything for everyone.
