EVE Online Celebrates Holiday Season With A Cool (Permafrost) Event

The annual player coordinated Santa Spirit event began Friday for EVE Online players ("capsuleers"), just a week after developer CCP Games detailed the latest changes to the space MMO's War Declaration system, introducing "war eligibility." But that's not all the holiday news coming to the world of EVE!

Allow us to introduce Operation Permafrost, a holiday-themed event that will see players meet a mysterious third party and journey to the polar region of a mysterious ice dwarf to disrupt ORE Frostline’s operations and take on Mordu’s Legion. The event opens up new challenges, visuals, and rewards, while also changing up gameplay by letting players fly closer than ever before to a planet's surface.

EVE Online players can access the Operation Permafrost event via The Agency in the Neocom menu in-game. Each objective requires players to complete a series of challenges, racking up Agency points in the process to unlock new rewards. Players keep track of challenge progress from the info panel and can claim challenge rewards by quick-accessing The Agency home. Participating in the event allows players to obtain exclusive Permafrost SKINS, brand new blueprints for Mordu’s Legion and Frostline modules, as well as limited-time Boosters and Cerebral Accelerators.

Paul Elsy, EVE Online’s Senior Community Manager at CCP:

“We invite all EVE Online players to join the festivities and bag some limited-time loot while flying closer than ever before to a planet’s orbit. Alongside our 13 Days of EVE gifting event, it’s really worth joining the fun during this holiday season.”

Just in Time for EVE Online's War Eligibility

Operation Permafrost is a quick followup to EVE Online's latest update which introduced two new Triglavian ships, auroras on planets and the first in a series of improvements to the War Declaration system - a first step that will see further updates in 2019. The changes offer more protection for players in high-security space, and require that these player corporations have meet the requirements of "War Eligibility" before other corps declare war against them. And to be war eligible, a player corporation or alliance must own at least one of these structures anywhere in the game:

  • All Upwell Structures (including Upwell FLEX structures)
  • Starbase Control Towers
  • Player-owned Customs Offices
  • Sovereignty Structures (Infrastructure Hubs and Territorial Control Units)

Official details here.

As for the new ships, players can get their hands on two brand new Triglavian logistics cruisers - the Rodiva class tech I cruiser and its tech II counterpart, the Zarmazd class logistics cruiser.

Both new ships benefit from an all new Triglavian-themed remote repair module, designed around the same weapons characteristics as the Triglavian Entropic Disintegrator. The same update brought new stunning visual improvements to planets in the form of auroras. These are rare sights but can be found all across the cluster.

With Agency points, players obtain the exclusive Holiday SKIN, giving players a reminder of their arctic exploits. These limited-time rewards are only be available throughout the Operation Permafrost event which runs from December 17, 2018 to January 2, 2019.
