Warning: SPOILERS for House of X #6
A new age of X-Men is beginning for Marvel Comics, and the mutants who have been chosen to lead it--becoming the most important X-Men in the process--have now been officially revealed. And we can guarantee it isn't who fans expected.
It's only the latest twist in a massive line of changes being made to the X-Men status quo in the Marvel Universe. After decades of being ostracized and victimized, and facing the dark truth that Marvel's mutants will always end up exterminated, Charles Xavier and Moira MacTaggert have done the unthinkable. Allied with Magneto, conquered mutant death through cloning and resurrection, and founded a new mutant nation on Krakoa. But now that mutants are powerful, safe, united, and basically immortal… which heroes will decide their future? Or in the case of the latest X-Men twist… which villains?
The previous issue unveiled the leadership plans presumably constructed by Xavier, Magneto, and Moira, selecting a "Quiet Council" of twelve mutants to shape and support the fledgling nation for the foreseeable future, at least. But rather than choosing the "best" men or women, it turns out the X-Men inviting supervillains into their paradise was a sign of things to come. Or more specifically, the granting of amnesty and a fresh start to those previously branded as criminals or villains. That all started with Charles Xavier and Magneto inviting Emma Frost onto the Council… and requesting she bring more villains with her.
When House of X #5 revealed that a group of twelve would be leading the mutants' future, fans quickly pointed out that Marvel already spoiled the Quiet Council's identity in a coming cover image. The newest issues confirms their identities, but also divided the twelve into four groups of three--with varying levels of trust, morality, or outright villainy. Including the X-Men's greatest enemy, the first mutant Apocalypse. Take a look at the chosen twelve:
- The Founders: Xavier, Magneto, and Apocalypse.
- The Family: Nightcrawler, Jean Grey, and Storm.
- The Friends: Emma Frost, Sebastian Shaw, and "The Red King."
- The Allies: Mystique, Mr. Sinister, and Exodus.
Having at least four supervillains (depending on where such a line is drawn) on the Quiet Council will prove controversial in itself. Each seems to have their own role to play in the shaping of Krakoa and its people, ranging from shipping infrastructure to faith and devotion to the cause. But even more suspicious than the notion that villains would protect their own, is the noticeable absence of the Hellfire Club's "Red King." X-Men marketing material along with the comics themselves have teased Kitty Pryde becoming the Red Queen, and the leader of the X-Men she always should have been. So the choice of labeling the empty seat as reserved for the new Red King is meant to be mysterious--but we're still assuming this is a bit of deception on Emma Frost's, or even Kitty's part.
Fans are sure to have opinions on the mutants chosen to lead the next chapter of X-Men history, but if this reboot has taught us anything, it's that there will still be a few twists and turns before this relaunch is finished.
