Supernatural: 10 Storylines Fans Didn’t Like | ScreenRant

You can’t satisfy everyone out there, and no matter how great a storyline might seem to a show’s writers, they all can’t hit the right areas. On Supernatural, there have been a bunch of arcs over the fifteen-year period that the fandom hasn’t been fond of, and have even outright hated.

In this list, we’re looking at the storylines that the majority of the viewers wanted to be done with; some of these are still ongoing and fans can’t wait until they’re over. We’re also going to be listing down why the storylines weren’t great and why the show as well has avoided referencing these angles once they were finished.

10 Dean's Domestic Life

The original plan was to end the series after what was the best finale on the show, but the series carried on and we saw Dean domesticated by the premiere of Season 6. The bad thing about this angle was how Dean himself appeared to hate where he was and looked as if he was pretending to like Ben and Lisa.

The show attempted to make fans care about the mother and son throughout the season, but none of those managed to be successful and viewers began to despise this storyline that was keeping Dean from his full potential. Cut to the season’s end, and Ben and Lisa were written out for good to never return.

9 Adam Remaining In The Cage

There are only a few things that are more heartbreaking than what happened to Adam, and the show took a complete decade before the youngest sibling managed to escape Hell, that too without any help from the Winchesters.

Fans found it extremely unfair to the young man (who wasn’t even in his twenties) to be stuck in Lucifer’s Cage with the worst archangels in existence. The show stopped referencing to the character altogether to avoid painting the Winchesters as villains, but we never forgot Adam. It was only as recently as Season 15's mid-season finale that Adam was finally released.

8 Sam Abandoning Dean And Kevin

We’d gotten used to the Winchesters’ empty promises of not looking for the other should one of them go missing, so the expectation was that Sam would’ve been distraught after Dean disappeared to Purgatory.

However, not only was Sam shown to have moved on, he didn’t even seem to care much that Dean had gone away. Viewers pointed out how out-of-character this was for Sam, especially when he also abandoned Kevin whom he at least could’ve found on Earth. This was easily the worst Sam has been depicted on the show, and we haven’t revisited these actions ever since.

7 Castiel And Dean's "Relationship Issues"

These two have been responsible for many fan fictions and memes centered around the show, with fans expecting the relationship to never sour. However, Castiel and Dean are currently in the midst of a much maligned storyline.

This began with Dean blaming Castiel for all the problems the characters have been having since the end of Season 14, with Dean even admitting to not caring about Castiel anymore. While the majority of the support from the fandom has been for Castiel, the consensus is still in favor of ending this plot sooner than later.

6 The Winchesters Trying To Take Down Jack

Fans hadn’t expected the storyline of Lucifer’s son being born to be that great, but we were all pleasantly surprised when Jack turned out to be an adorable favorite of ours. Unfortunately, Supernatural then tried to make him out to be a villain by having the Soulless Jack accidentally kill Mary.

And yet, fans have in turn sided with Jack as Sam and Dean were seen going back on their own word of seeing Jack as family by actively hunting him down. Viewers wanted things to return to normal and for the Winchesters to understand that Jack hadn’t done anything deliberately, but we got a dead Jack for all our efforts in bringing this story to an end.

5 The Leviathans Killing Castiel And Bobby

The Leviathans themselves are antagonists who have been the ones with the greatest lost potential, but they were never given a chance as their introduction came at the cost of Castiel and Bobby. Since fans weren’t buying these monsters as legit threats, it was doubly frustrating to have two of our favorite characters bow out.

From there on out, Season 7 instead became more of a waiting game as fans were more interested in seeing when Castiel and Bobby would be coming back rather than get into anything about the Leviathans. Today, this arc is criticized for taking Bobby away permanently and costing Castiel a significant time on the show.

4 Crowley's Subdued Role In His Final Appearances

We can’t point to one specific story here, seeing as Crowley didn’t actually have any specific arc going for him starting from Season 10. He was basically bumping around here and there with no real purpose, with this lack of focus even seemingly causing the actor to leave the show.

There was enough room to either turn Crowley into the Big Bad he’d once been, or at least have some kind of relevance the same way Rowena and Castiel had, but the show didn’t grab any chance. Now, fans rue how Crowley’s last seasons gave him such lackluster storylines.

3 Everything With Mary Winchester

When you think of Mary’s tenure starting from Season 12 and ending about three years later, you just shake your head at how whatever she did was so...needless! She had nothing to offer, would complain about the most ridiculous things, and wasn’t even interested in having a relationship with her own sons.

It became a habit of fans to complain about how Mary contributed absolutely zero to the show after every episode, and the deaths of more engaging characters like Mick Davies, Arthur Ketch, among others were exasperating when we saw how Mary still lived when she didn’t need to. The whole arc of her resurrection was a failure among fans to begin with.

2 The Men Of Letters Arc

The funny thing about this angle was how even the showrunners realized how bad this turned out to be as Chuck referenced to how “weak” this arc was in the Season 14 finale. Fans couldn’t make heads or tails of what the British Men of Letters’ agenda was, and even after their departure it perplexes the fandom.

The confusion mainly arises from the question over what the heck this faction’s problem was, and how they antagonized the Winchesters for no apparent reason. The show also seemed to take note of this reaction and deviated toward the birth of Jack later in the season.

1 Sam And Dean's Issues Around The Apocalypse

It’s always a controversial plot angle from the show when Sam and Dean are pitted against each other, but the most hated one remains around the time of the Season 4 finale where these two ended up coming to blows

Before this, we’d always seen the brothers put on a united front, and the change from the norm didn’t sit well with fans. Watching their relationship deteriorate by the end of the season is something that still can’t be seen very comfortably, and perhaps that was the reason why the fifth season instead had the brothers be even more loving toward one another than they had previously been.
